About The Position

Yamhill County Sheriff's Office is actively recruiting to create a pool of diverse candidates eligible for anticipated seasonal part-time certified Marine Boat Captains (MBC) to work 12 - 36 hours per week. The anticipated duration of this position is approximately 3.5 months from Memorial Day to Labor Day 2027. Regular work days are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with occasional weekday shifts as needed. Marine Boat Captains focus on boater safety through education and enforcement, including the enforcement of criminal laws. This position receives direction from the program manager sergeant, supervising sergeants, and the division commander. Duties around and on the waterways of Yamhill County include, but are not limited to, performing safety inspections and examinations of various water craft and equipment, responding to rescues, boating accidents, or other emergencies, and making appearances at safety fairs and other events. This position is not represented and is non-benefitted. The successful candidates must be available to regularly work scheduled 10-hour or 12-hour shifts on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between 0800 and midnight. Position will also require occasional weekday shifts. The successful candidates will possess good moral character, demonstrate strong customer service and communication skills, and put forth a professional image. They are skilled, highly motivated, self-directed candidates with strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, as well as skill in communicating effectively with individuals during difficult and often stressful situations.

Requirements

  • Must be in current service as a certified marine deputy in good standing with a law enforcement agency in Oregon; or a current certified law enforcement officer in good standing with a law enforcement agency in Oregon with at least six months of certified service; or a retired certified law enforcement officer in good standing at time of retirement from a law enforcement agency; or in current service as a solo-qualified certified reserve who has successfully completed a police reserve academy and is in good standing with a law enforcement agency in Oregon.
  • Must be able to pass swim standards as set forth by the OSMB and Oregon State Sheriffs' Association.
  • Must obtain an Oregon Boater Education card (if not already in possession).
  • Ability to secure and maintain a driver’s license valid in the state of Oregon.
  • Will be required to drive a County vehicle.
  • Employees authorized to operate a private vehicle on County business are required to carry a valid driver’s license and liability insurance minimums as outlined in ORS 806.070.
  • Will be subject to successful completion of a personal background check including, but not limited to, criminal, civil, driving, military, educational, and employment history pursuant to OAR 259-008-0015.
  • Applicants will be required to pass a medical exam and/or psychological evaluation prior to appointment in order to meet standard under OAR 259-008-0010.

  • Applicants who possess current Lifeguarding certification, CPR/First Aid certification, and/or an Oregon Boater Education card are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Additional preference may be given to those applicants that are fluent in English and Spanish.
