Manufacturing Test Engineer

Formlabs•Somerville, MA

About The Position

As a Manufacturing Test Engineer at Formlabs, you will lead the design and development of manufacturing test systems that take electromechanical products from prototype through high-volume production. Working across hardware and software, you will build test and calibration hardware and infrastructure, partner with manufacturing and operations teams, and make production data visible and actionable across the global supply chain. The role focuses on reliable, scalable systems and software that support the manufacture of printers and related products worldwide. You will develop factory test solutions, Python-based scripts, and internal data tools and services. You will also use manufacturing data to inform design, quality, and operational decisions, and continuously improve software development, testing, and deployment processes across global factories.

  • Bachelor of Science in Robotics, Mechatronics, or another engineering discipline, with professional experience combining hardware design and software integration.
  • Experience developing and implementing computer vision and machine learning algorithms.
  • Strong proficiency in Python.
  • Experience designing or supporting test jigs, fixtures, or automation tools deployed in manufacturing environments.
  • Good understanding of software integration with embedded systems and electrical and mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally, communicate clearly, proactively manage projects and multiple priorities, and thrive in an environment requiring quick decisions and knowledge sharing.
  • Care in building robust, maintainable systems and willingness to debug prototype setups and production-line issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with manufacturing teams on complex products, including collaboration with third-party contract manufacturers and new product introduction build cycles.
  • Experience developing and maintaining production-grade code shared across teams.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD, with OnShape preferred, and mechanical design.
  • Full-stack web development experience, including React/JS, DevOps, Docker, and microservices.
  • Experience with C or C++ on microcontrollers.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and validate hardware and software solutions for electromechanical factory test systems used for product calibration and testing from prototype through mass production.
  • Develop Python-based test scripts and integrate hardware interfaces such as sensors, actuators, and motion systems.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing engineering teams to define test strategies and deploy robust, scalable tools across production sites.
  • Build and support internal tools and services for collecting, storing, and analyzing manufacturing data, including calibration results, EMS logs, configuration data, and test data.
  • Apply data science tools to extract insights from manufacturing performance data and inform design, quality, and operational decisions.
  • Improve development, testing, and deployment processes to streamline software releases across global factories.
