About The Position

The Manufacturing Technology Engineer – Metrology is a hands-on subject matter expert responsible for AFL’s metrology workflows and dimensional inspection. The role generates accurate measurement data, leads First Article Inspection (FAI) documentation, and provides data-driven support to engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle. It works across Product Development, Quality, and Manufacturing to validate complex plastic and metal components and ensure products meet dimensional and functional requirements. The engineer uses Zeiss CT scanning systems, CMMs, optical measurement systems, structured-light 3D scanners, and traditional measurement methods. The role also owns metrology processes, maintains equipment and documentation, supports validation and troubleshooting, and evaluates new metrology technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metrology, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or a related technical discipline; 5–7 years of technical metrology experience may also be considered.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on dimensional inspection experience.
  • Experience with tactile and optical CMM systems, including program creation and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to generate complete FAI documentation packages.
  • Experience working in an ISO 9001 environment.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10–15% for supplier audits, training, or equipment support.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex dimensional data clearly.
  • Exceptional precision and rigor in measurement setup, data analysis, and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate across engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams, and adapt to shifting priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years of dimensional inspection experience for consideration at Senior level.
  • Experience with fiber optic components or telecom-related dimensional inspection.
  • Familiarity with injection-molded part inspection, including warpage analysis and internal defect characterization.
  • Experience with additional metrology platforms such as PolyWorks, Geomagic, Nikon CT, or Keyence systems.
  • Background in statistical analysis, SPC, GR&R, or capability studies.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain Zeiss CT scanning systems, including scan setup, calibration, voxel optimization, and reconstruction workflows.
  • Perform high-accuracy dimensional inspections using contact and non-contact CMMs, structured-light 3D scanners, optical measurement systems, and traditional measurement disciplines.
  • Lead the creation of complete FAI packages, including dimensional results, ballooned drawings, capability studies, and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 quality system requirements and customer-specific documentation standards.
  • Support IQ/OQ/PQ validation activities with dimensional data and statistical analysis, including Cpk and GR&R.
  • Develop and maintain metrology work instructions, calibration schedules, and inspection best practices.
  • Improve measurement accuracy, repeatability, and throughput.
  • Partner with Design Engineering to validate part geometry, identify dimensional risks, and support DFM discussions using measurement data.
  • Analyze CT scan results to identify internal defects, voids, knit lines, warpage, and assembly interference conditions.
  • Support Manufacturing Engineering and Supplier Quality with dimensional troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action validation.
  • Maintain metrology equipment, perform basic repairs, and coordinate external service when required.
  • Evaluate metrology technologies and recommend upgrades.
  • Generate dimensional reports using Zeiss Inspect, including feature extraction, GD&T evaluation, color-map deviation analysis, and trend studies.
  • Travel up to 10–15% for supplier audits, training, or equipment support.

Benefits

  • 401K company match up to 4% (dollar-for-dollar match).
  • Professional development, training, and tuition reimbursement programs.
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance policy options.
  • Opportunities for career progression.
