Manufacturing Systems Engineer

Western Partitions•Columbus, OH

About The Position

The Manufacturing Systems Engineer is a hands-on technical role that turns operational needs into practical, scalable, and supportable solutions for WPI’s manufacturing operations. Reporting to the Operations Systems Manager, this position designs, builds, integrates, supports, and improves applications and workflows used by manufacturing teams. QuickBase is the primary platform, and the engineer serves as technical owner for assigned applications. The role covers configuring applications, building workflows and integrations, troubleshooting issues, and delivering solutions from requirements through production support. Successful solutions should be adopted, documented, reliable, and supportable. The role owns and improves manufacturing execution system applications and integrations, including their data models, access, workflows, automations, dashboards, and reports. It develops connections among QuickBase, Procore, Viewpoint Vista, Microsoft 365, and other WPI systems using APIs, connectors, webhooks, scripting, and low-code tools. The engineer also maintains technical documentation, creates user guidance and training, provides advanced support, and works with Information Technology and the Help Desk to establish escalation and sustainable support procedures. Success is measured by adoption and reductions in manual work, errors, and delays; reliability, security, documentation, and supportability of applications and integrations; predictable delivery from discovery through deployment; improved data quality and workflow consistency; and fewer recurring support issues. The position is primarily office-based, supports teams across the organization, may require occasional evening or weekend work, and includes travel approximately once per quarter to manufacturing offices. Compensation is commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated skills.

Requirements

  • Three or more years of related experience in business applications, manufacturing technology, workflow automation, systems integration, or a comparable role; equivalent education and practical experience will be considered.
  • Experience with application configuration, workflow design, data modeling, automation, reporting, testing, troubleshooting, and support.
  • Working knowledge of APIs, connectors, authentication, JSON, webhooks, or related integration concepts.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to identify root causes rather than only address symptoms.
  • Strong communication skills with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and move work from concept through operational use.
  • Commitment to documentation, standardization, reliability, and responsive internal service.

Nice To Haves

  • QuickBase development or administration experience is strongly preferred; comparable low-code platform experience will be considered, especially in manufacturing, specialty contracting, engineering, field services, or another project-based industry.

  • Working knowledge of SQL, PowerShell, Python, JavaScript, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with manufacturing data, document control, estimating, preconstruction, project management, BIM, engineering, or safety systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, test, deploy, and improve applications and workflows supporting manufacturing operations.
  • Translate operational requirements into system designs, data models, workflows, reports, automations, and integrations.
  • Serve as technical owner and subject matter expert for QuickBase and other assigned manufacturing execution system applications.
  • Simplify processes, reduce manual effort, and improve data quality and reliability.
  • Deliver solutions from discovery through production support while balancing usability, security, maintainability, cost, and long-term value.
  • Own and continuously improve assigned manufacturing execution system applications, including data models, access, workflows, automations, dashboards, and reports.
  • Troubleshoot application, integration, performance, and data issues, and correct recurring root causes.
  • Maintain development, testing, validation, change management, and release practices.
  • Apply WPI standards for access, data handling, change management, documentation, and support in partnership with Information Technology.
  • Monitor application health, data quality, automation, and integration reliability, and maintain clear ownership and support procedures.
  • Develop and support integrations among QuickBase, Procore, Viewpoint Vista, Microsoft 365, and other WPI systems.
  • Use APIs, connectors, webhooks, scripting, and low-code tools to connect systems and automate processes.
  • Diagnose integration and data-flow failures, considering exception handling, permissions, data integrity, and supportability.
  • Maintain technical documentation, system diagrams, data mappings, test plans, release records, and support procedures.
  • Develop user guidance and training for application and process changes.
  • Provide advanced support and establish clear escalation paths with Information Technology and the Help Desk.
  • Address recurring support issues through system, process, documentation, or training improvements.
  • Transition new solutions into sustainable operational support.
  • Travel approximately once per quarter to manufacturing offices.
