Manufacturing Quality Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple Inc. is hiring a Manufacturing Quality Engineer for work in Cupertino, California, and various unanticipated locations throughout the USA. The role applies geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure proper part manufacturing and assembly, performs tolerance stack-up analysis to prevent dimensional interference, and develops metrology techniques to measure module parameters. The engineer uses statistical methods to optimize processes and implement statistical quality control, investigates module failures, develops reliability test methods, and evaluates data to establish statistical limits for process and part specifications. The role also conducts measurement system analysis and leads cross-functional yield-gap reviews and corrective-action efforts. The position requires 20% domestic and international travel and a 40-hour workweek.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience and/or education using tolerance stack analysis for mechanical assemblies to define appropriate mechanical specifications.
  • Experience and/or education using GD&T to interpret engineering drawings and develop inspection plans.
  • Experience and/or education using ANSYS and ABAQUS for structural and thermal finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Experience and/or education using design of experiments (DOE) and regression analysis to optimize process input parameters.
  • Experience and/or education performing Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and CT scanning.
  • Experience and/or education performing Design for Manufacturing analysis on assemblies to optimize manufacturing processes.
  • Experience and/or education characterizing and improving mechanical and thermal properties of different materials.
  • Able to meet the stated travel requirement of 20% domestic and international travel.

Responsibilities

  • Apply GD&T to ensure proper manufacturing and assembly of parts.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to prevent dimensional interference after manufacturing.
  • Develop and implement metrology techniques to measure module parameters.
  • Use statistical tools, including JMP, regression, and design of experiments, to optimize manufacturing processes and implement statistical quality control.
  • Perform module failure analysis to identify failure modes and understand failure physics, improving module assembly, function, and cosmetics.
  • Develop detailed reliability test methods for the module and ensure test objectives are achieved.
  • Compile and evaluate data to determine appropriate statistical limits and variables for process and part specifications.
  • Conduct measurement system analysis to manage measurement errors and provide robust measurement systems.
  • Perform yield-gap analysis and lead cross-functional reviews of corrective actions through process improvements or changes, design or tolerance changes, or part screening.
  • Propose a binning plan for SRB (Spec Relief Build) builds.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical and dental coverage
  • Retirement benefits
  • Discounted products and free services
  • Tuition reimbursement for certain formal education expenses related to career advancement at Apple
  • Potential eligibility for discretionary bonuses or commission payments
  • Potential relocation assistance
  • Opportunity to participate in discretionary employee stock programs, including restricted stock unit awards and the Employee Stock Purchase Plan
