Manufacturing Quality Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA
•$163,500 - $246,200

About The Position

Apple Inc. is hiring a Manufacturing Quality Engineer for work in Cupertino, California, and various unanticipated locations throughout the USA. The role applies geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to support proper manufacturing and assembly of parts, and uses tolerance stack-up analysis to prevent dimensional interference after manufacturing. It develops metrology techniques, applies statistical methods to optimize manufacturing processes and implement statistical quality control, and conducts failure analysis and reliability testing of modules. The engineer evaluates data to establish statistical limits and process and part specifications, conducts measurement system analysis, and leads yield gap reviews with cross-functional teams. The role supports corrective actions through process, design, or tolerance changes, or parts screening, and proposes binning plans for Spec Relief Build (SRB) builds. The position requires 20% domestic and international travel and a 40-hour workweek.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience and/or education utilizing tolerance stack analysis for mechanical assemblies to define appropriate mechanical specifications.
  • Experience and/or education utilizing GD&T to interpret engineering drawings and develop inspection plans.
  • Experience and/or education using ANSYS and ABAQUS to perform structural and thermal finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Experience and/or education utilizing design of experiment (DOE) and regression analysis to optimize process input parameters.
  • Experience and/or education performing Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and CT Scanning.
  • Experience and/or education performing Design for Manufacturing Analysis on assemblies to optimize manufacturing processes.
  • Experience and/or education characterizing and improving the mechanical and thermal properties of different materials.

Responsibilities

  • Apply GD&T to ensure proper manufacturing and assembly of parts.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to prevent dimensional interference after manufacturing.
  • Develop and implement metrology techniques to measure module parameters.
  • Use statistical tools, including JMP, regression, and design of experiments, to optimize manufacturing processes and implement statistical quality control.
  • Perform module failure analysis to identify failure modes and understand the physics of failure, improving assembly, function, and cosmetics.
  • Develop detailed module reliability test methods and ensure test objectives are achieved.
  • Compile and evaluate data to establish appropriate statistical limits and process and part specifications.
  • Conduct measurement system analysis to manage measurement errors and provide robust measurement systems.
  • Perform yield gap analysis and lead cross-functional reviews of corrective actions.
  • Propose corrective actions through process improvements or changes, design or tolerance changes, or parts screening.
  • Propose binning plans for SRB (Spec Relief Build) builds.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical and dental coverage.
  • Retirement benefits.
  • Discounted products and free services.
  • Reimbursement for certain educational expenses, including tuition, for formal education related to advancing a career at Apple.
  • Potential eligibility for discretionary bonuses or commission payments.
  • Potential relocation assistance.
  • Opportunity to participate in discretionary restricted stock unit awards.
  • Opportunity to purchase Apple stock at a discount through voluntary participation in the Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
