About The Position

The transport Process Engineering group is looking for a candidate to fulfill the role of Manufacturing Process Development Engineer/Scientist. The products manufactured are part of virtually every type of telecom, enterprise, and data center network. The processing expertise gained by the team over 20 years is progressing into the next-generation technologies. The successful candidate will be directly involved in the process design cycle from conceptual design, a first build prototype in the lab, device characterization using both manual and automated equipment, to high-volume production by one of the contract manufacturers. The position resides in the Ottawa Telecom Transport Business Unit, but frequent business travel to Asia is expected. This role could be ideal for someone with a passion for learning and solving problems, an educational background including materials science, physics, engineering, programming or directly related disciplines, and hands-on experience in assembly processes and equipment setup.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Engineering Science, Robotic Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or other relevant engineering or physical science discipline is required.
  • Experience working in a laboratory or manufacturing environment is necessary.
  • Familiarity with components assemblies such as Wire bonding, soldering, epoxy application, machining, designing tools to assist with the prototyping.
  • Ability to work effectively with design engineers, manufacturing and external vendors to solve issues with optical components.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Self-motivated worker thrives without close management.
  • General curiosity towards material things.
  • Enjoys tinkering, working with their hands, and critically thinking about the physical world.
  • Familiarity with optoelectronic development from conceptual design, vendor interaction, package prototyping, testing, and performance characterization to NPI/volume production.
  • Familiarity in working with Contract Manufacturers (CM) and knowledge of assembly/test equipment capabilities (particularly in Asia).
  • Experience with automated assembly and test equipment.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidEdge, SolidWorks, or equivalent).

Nice To Haves

  • PhD degree is an asset.
  • Familiar with Lab/manufacturing tools an asset: Wire bonder, Microscopes, Coordinate measuring machines (CMM), profilometers, 3d printers, etc.
  • Experience with basic machine shop tools is an asset (drill press, mill, etc).

Responsibilities

  • Be the process owner for manufacturing processes used to assemble high-precision optical products, including preliminary wire bonding.
  • Specify the design and lead the assembly of tools and jigs.
  • Assist with developing improved tooling and tool support strategies for automated and manual manufacturing.
  • Perform failure analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Sustain processes with emphasis on statistical process control, maintain yields and improve yields to targets.
  • Improve manufacturability and defect reduction for different process areas of the fab by working closely with various process engineers.
  • Contribute to the transfer of new products to manufacturing sites and subsequent cost reductions.
  • Work within a cleanroom environment with the prerequisite use of cleanroom clothing.
  • Analysis of tool and process data with continuous improvement based on SPC and 6-sigma principles.
  • Design, development and integration of robotics to different areas of Mfg. Process including but not limited to advance packaging, automated epoxy application, soldering, and pick-and-place processes.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation of procedures, publish results and provide training to technicians.
  • Conduct experiments, including Design of Experiments (DOE), to evaluate the sensitivity of products and/or processes to different variables.
  • This role involves a variety of hands-on and desk work (Roughly 50-50 in the lab and at your desk).
