About The Position

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is looking for someone to join our Product Support & Development team as an a Manufacturing Engineering Technician I (MfET) in Pullman, WA. As an Engineering Support Technician I you’ll be responsible for managing and owning proto builds, collaborating with R&D on Engineering Change Order requests, troubleshooting issues with the manufacturing floor, leading continuous process improvement efforts, and support of SEL products and processes. The role requires strong collaboration, a composed demeanor, technical proficiency, and a continuous improvement mindset to enhance product quality, operational efficiency, and customer support. A typical day as a Manufacturing Engineering Technician (MfET) might include: Participating in design reviews and manufacturability assessments in accordance with DFM guidelines. Completing assigned process planning, risk assessment, and/or process capability analysis tasks. Navigating multiple business systems to input and update parts, products, BOMs, routes, specifications, and work instructions. Supporting internal quality action requests, external customer feedback resolutions, and statistical process control (SPC) implementations to drive continuous improvement. Providing input for system enhancements towards improved communication flow and optimized work processes.

Requirements

  • A two-year technical degree, or the combination of equivalent training and relevant work experience
  • 2+ years in a technical role supporting manufacturing processes and using MES/ERP (manufacturing execution/enterprise resource planning) systems to create and/or update BOMs, change orders, process documentation, routes, work instructions, etc.
  • Demonstrate technical competence for ALL “core curriculum”: Drawing & schematic interpretation, Technical Writing, Problem Solving (such as DOE and 8D), Safety Risk Assessments, World Class Manufacturing, Mathematics (Geometry, Trigonometry, College algebra), Statistics, Applied Physics
  • Demonstrate technical competence in 2+ of the following 7 pathways: Continuous improvement methodologies, such as JIT (Kanban, takt time alignment, continuous flow, SMED/QCO); Process analysis (FMEA, PFD, Spaghetti diagram, VSM); Process control (Metrology, MSA, process capability analysis, SPC); Electronic circuits and components; Machine operation, instrumentation, and control; Mechanical design, Statics, CAD, tolerance analysis, and rapid prototyping; Metal forming, cutting/machining, finishing, and joining processes; Programming, scripting, data structures, data mining, and analysis tools; Project Management
  • Work effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Strong written, verbal, and documentation skills

Nice To Haves

  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Proficiency using MS Dynamics AX and MS Office apps
  • Experience using SEL applications, such as BluePrint, FDWeb, FactoryCore, FactoryVision, etc
  • Experience using Project Management tools, such as Confluence and JIRA
