Manufacturing Engineering Intern

Nomad GCS•Columbia Falls, MT
•Onsite

About The Position

As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern within the Innovative Solutions Group, you will gain hands-on experience bridging design engineering and production. Working with Senior Manufacturing Engineers and mentors, you will focus on Design for Manufacturability (DFM), process documentation, and finding solutions for electrical and mechanical build challenges during physical construction. The internship follows the Manufacturing Engineer I (Entry / Developing) framework and builds foundational manufacturing engineering skills, including applying DFM principles, supporting standard work documentation, and learning tooling, fixture, and assembly workflows. Nomad Engineering is organized into Mechanical, Electrical, IT, Human Factors, and Software disciplines, along with operational teams. Interns may gain exposure to standards and modularity, design engineering, advanced engineering, and manufacturing and industrial engineering. The position requires U.S. citizenship and satisfaction of Federal Contractor employee requirements. Nomad GCS does not support H1B visas for this position.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and meet all Federal Contractor employee requirements.
  • Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science program in Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; typically a student who has completed sophomore or junior year.
  • Prior coursework or project experience with CAD software.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and mechanical fundamentals, including AC/DC systems, harness assembly, and wiring pass-throughs.
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and multimeter or test equipment.
  • Eagerness to learn on the fly, a strong problem-solving attitude, and the ability to communicate effectively between engineering and shop-floor technicians.
  • Ability to stand and sit for extended periods; manual dexterity to operate office equipment; occasional ability to lift or move up to 20 pounds; and ability to perform occasional climbing or hands-on testing activities.
  • Ability to work safely around energized systems when required and to travel occasionally as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SolidWorks or SolidWorks Electrical is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior engineers with DFM reviews during digital design and physical builds to help ensure electrical and mechanical systems are repeatable and manufacturable.
  • Use ECAD/CAD tools, such as SolidWorks Electrical or an equivalent, to update manufacturing models, schematics, standard work documentation, and production instructions.
  • Help respond to basic shop-floor questions, clarify engineering intent, and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical build issues under guidance.
  • Support basic fixture modifications, basic shop machinery and tool use, and workspace design to promote safety, quality, and repeatability.
  • Learn established Engineering Change Request and Change Order processes and assist with production documentation updates.
  • Assist with tolerance reviews and basic test setups, and formally document validation results.
  • Learn to manage multiple task requests, incorporate feedback to reduce production rework, and model Nomad Core Values.
