Manufacturing Engineer - Crystal Growth Operations
About The Position
Coherent Corp. is seeking an entry-level Manufacturing Engineer in Budd Lake, New Jersey, to focus on industrialized high-temperature crystal growth manufacturing processes. The role requires technical knowledge, hands-on work, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment. The engineer owns crystal growth processes across product lines and develops expertise in growth operations. The position supports daily manufacturing operations, improves crystal quality, yield, and process control, and works with technicians to execute processes on schedule. It also involves creating and maintaining engineering drawings, layouts, tooling designs, process documentation, and training initiatives; supporting new equipment installation and qualification; troubleshooting process and equipment issues; analyzing data; and performing crystal qualification and characterization. The position requires adherence to safety, quality, manufacturing, environmental, and applicable management-system requirements. Work takes place in a production environment and includes standing, occasional lifting and moving of materials or equipment up to 40 pounds, handling molten material in a furnace with required PPE, and extended periods sitting at a computer or in meetings. Employees must follow site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. corporate EHS standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline such as Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Materials Science Engineering.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Strong analytical ability.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods in a production environment.
- Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 40 pounds of material or equipment on the manufacturing floor.
- Ability to comply with job-task safety requirements, including wearing safety shoes, fire-retardant suits, full-face respirators, and hot-work PPE when handling molten material in a furnace.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer or in meetings.
- Use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling documents.
- Follow site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. corporate EHS standards.
Nice To Haves
- Two or more years of experience preferred.
- Experience with mechanical design software; SolidWorks is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Own crystal growth processes for different product lines and develop subject matter expertise in growth operations.
- Champion continuous improvement in crystal quality, yield, and process control.
- Support daily operations and partner with manufacturing technicians to execute processes on schedule.
- Create and maintain engineering drawings, layouts, and tooling designs for related hardware.
- Author, review, and maintain work instructions, SOPs, and process documentation.
- Lead training of manufacturing technicians and cross-training initiatives.
- Support installation, commissioning, and qualification of new equipment and subsystem upgrades.
- Troubleshoot complex process-control and equipment-related issues.
- Perform detailed data analysis.
- Perform crystal qualification and characterization.
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and manufacturing requirements.
- Follow site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. corporate EHS standards.
- Depending on location and role responsibilities, execute and maintain applicable ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and other standards within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
