Manufacturing Engineer – Outfitting Detail Planning

Saronic Technologies•Brownsville, TX

About The Position

The Manufacturing Engineer – Outfitting Detail Planning translates design packages for joinery, safety equipment, and metal outfitting items into detailed work instructions that sequence installation at the appropriate stage of construction. The scope includes manholes, incline and vertical ladders, independent tanks, windows, walkways, handrails, joiner bulkheads and doors, and life-saving and safety equipment. Because outfitting spans nearly every ship space and must be coordinated with structure, access, and other trades, the role plans installation sequences to avoid blocking access or requiring removal and reinstallation. The engineer works closely with structural, piping, electrical, HVAC, and coatings planning teams to coordinate compartment and zone completion across the outfitting scope. The role also supports first-article installations, incorporates production-floor feedback into instructions and standard work, and maintains outfitting planning documentation and standards.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience in shipyard outfitting as an outfitting mechanic, joiner, or metal fabricator/installer, or equivalent planning experience built on that trade background.
  • Understanding of metal outfitting fabrication and installation practices, including ladders, walkways, handrails, manholes, and independent tanks, as well as joinery installation methods.
  • Working knowledge of ship construction, including unit/block construction, erection sequence, and zone outfitting.
  • Ability to read arrangement drawings, joiner plans, 3D models, and vendor or equipment data.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage a wide and varied scope across many compartments in parallel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in new-construction shipbuilding; repair or overhaul experience is also considered.
  • Familiarity with how safety and life-saving equipment is specified and installed to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with PLM or ERP systems such as Teamcenter or SAP.
  • Familiarity with ABS, USCG, or NAVSEA requirements as they apply to outfitting, life safety, and means of egress.
  • Technical or trade school education, an associate's degree, or a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed work instructions and installation sequences for metal outfitting items, joinery, and safety and life-saving equipment.
  • Determine installation sequences and methods for each item type relative to structural closure, coatings, and other outfitting.
  • Translate arrangement drawings, joiner plans, and vendor or equipment data into instructions that mechanics and joiners can follow without guesswork.
  • Coordinate compartment and zone completion strategies with structural, piping, electrical, HVAC, and coatings planning teams.
  • Sequence independent tank closures and coordinate manholes and access covers with piping, HVAC, and electrical routing.
  • Sequence ladder, walkway, and handrail installation relative to structural completion and personnel access during construction.
  • Identify and resolve constructability issues and interferences before they reach the production floor.
  • Ensure work instructions reflect applicable ABS, USCG, and NAVSEA requirements for life safety, means of egress, and penetration integrity.
  • Work iteratively with design engineering to correct drawings or adjust installation strategies.
  • Support first-article installations by walking the work with mechanics, joiners, and leads.
  • Refine instructions and standard work based on production-floor feedback.
  • Maintain outfitting planning documentation and standards across the program.
