Manufacturing Engineer - Sheet Metal

Volund ManufacturingHuntington Beach, CA
$145,000 - $185,000

About The Position

Volund is building propulsion for America’s next industrial revolution. We design propulsion systems for cost, agility, and scale, combining advanced automation, precision manufacturing, and rapid iteration to move from prototype to production at unprecedented speed. Intelligent manufacturing is engineering at scale. At Volund, engineers operate across the full stack, from concept and simulation to process code and machine execution, ensuring that what is designed can be built and what is built can be scaled. Volund is looking for a Manufacturing Engineer to lead the R&D and scaling of in-house superalloy sheet metal forming, rolling, spinning, and stamping processes for our small gas turbine engines. This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused on building these core sheet metal capabilities from the ground up. You will own the processes end-to-end, from initial concept and experimentation through qualification and production readiness while working closely with our design, manufacturing, and test teams in a fast-paced development environment. Experts who can wear multiple hats and drive rapid iteration are strongly desired.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5-8 years of hands-on experience in sheet metal manufacturing engineering, with deep expertise in forming, rolling, spinning, and/or stamping processes.
  • Demonstrated experience working with high-temperature superalloys or similar advanced aerospace materials in a development or R&D environment.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement new manufacturing processes from the ground up, including tooling design, fabrication, and process validation.
  • Proficiency with relevant CAD/CAM tools (e.g., NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent) for part and tool design.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience with superalloy sheet metal forming, rolling, spinning, and stamping in aerospace, propulsion, or high-performance turbomachinery applications.
  • Strong background in pre- and post-processing operations, including thermal treatments (annealing, stress relief, solution heat treating), precision cutting (flat and multi-axis laser), and welding integration for thin-sheet superalloy components.
  • Hands-on expertise in hot or cold forming techniques, die design, and press operations for thin-sheet materials.
  • Experience with ERP, MES, and PLM systems (e.g., Odoo, Teamcenter, or equivalent) in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with aerospace quality standards and first-article inspection/reporting processes.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Lead R&D, scaling, and continuous improvement of superalloy sheet metal forming, rolling, spinning, and stamping processes for high-performance turbine components.
  • Take ownership of establishing and scaling these sheet metal processes from scratch, including tooling development, parameter optimization, process validation, and qualification for production.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and test teams to optimize components for performance, manufacturability, cost, and scalability.
  • Integrate thermal treatments, precision cutting, and welding into the sheet metal workflow.
  • Develop and refine detailed manufacturing methods, work instructions, process documentation, and quality controls to deliver repeatable, high-precision results with advanced superalloys.
  • Drive process improvements through hands-on experimentation, data analysis, root cause investigation, and implementation of lean techniques where applicable.
  • Support prototype builds, first-article qualifications, and rapid iteration cycles from concept through production-ready sheet metal processes.

Benefits

  • Platinum Healthcare Benefits with comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans at no cost to you.
  • 100% covered Basic Life/AD&D and long-term disability insurance
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Lunch and fully stocked kitchen
  • Relocation assistance (depending on role eligibility).
