About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is dedicated to accelerating the transition to fusion energy by designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. We are seeking a talented Manufacturing Engineering Intern to join our team for a 13-26 week program, working 40-50 hours per week. CFS interns are integral to our organization, contributing to meaningful and challenging projects. This internship offers opportunities on-site in Devens, MA, with specific project assignments varying based on team needs. Interns must be authorized to work in the United States.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing an engineering degree with a focus in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
  • CAD design experience.
  • Familiarity with hand tools (machine shop experience is a plus).
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment, demonstrated through academic research, project teams, machine shops, hackathons, or industry internships.
  • Demonstration of exceptional results through a range of different pursuits.
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly with excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally.
  • Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods.
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer.
  • Compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information.

  • Machine shop experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and qualify manufacturing processes.
  • Design and update tooling, fixtures, and jigs using CAD software.
  • Create and update process documentation, including work instructions, flow sequences, and standard operating procedures.
  • Engage in continuous improvement and standardization efforts by maintaining and improving SOPs, documentation, and safety/quality/delivery project execution.
  • Resolve production blockers to ensure the team meets output targets.
