About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is dedicated to accelerating the transition to fusion energy by designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. We are seeking a talented Manufacturing Engineering Intern to join our team. CFS interns are highly valued and contribute to meaningful and challenging projects. This is a 13-26 week internship with a 40-50 hour work week, offering an hourly salary based on the intern's year in school. Opportunities are available on-site in Devens, MA, and interns are responsible for their own transportation and housing. Specific project assignments and technical skill requirements will vary based on team needs. This role is open to currently enrolled college students from bachelor's degree to PhD levels. Interns must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

Requirements

  • Pursuing an engineering degree with a focus in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
  • CAD design experience.
  • Familiarity with hand tools (machine shop experience is a plus).
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience through academic research, project teams, machine shops, hackathons, or industry internships.
  • Demonstration of exceptional results through a range of different pursuits.
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly with excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally.
  • Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and qualify manufacturing processes.
  • Design and update tooling, fixtures, and jigs using CAD software.
  • Create and update process documentation such as work instructions, flow sequences, and standard operating procedures.
  • Engage in continuous improvement and standardization efforts, maintaining and improving SOPs, documentation, and executing safety/quality/delivery projects.
  • Resolve production blockers to ensure the team meets output targets.
