Manufacturing Engineer II

Blue Origin•Space Coast, FL
•Onsite

About The Position

Blue Origin is hiring a Manufacturing Engineer II to support final integration of New Glenn’s Second Stage (GS2) as part of Blue Origin Operations. The engineer will provide primary engineering support on the production floor during builds, resolving issues in real time to keep work moving and the vehicle on schedule. The position is based in Merritt Island, Florida, and works B-shift, Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 PM to 2:00 AM. Relocation is available. The role focuses on developing and improving build processes, preparing and revising work instructions, supporting nonconformance resolution and corrective actions, and coordinating with engineering, quality, production control, and supply chain teams. The engineer will identify production roadblocks and tooling needs, track recurring issues, and drive improvements to safety, quality, efficiency, and cycle time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a relevant engineering role, preferably with a manufacturing focus.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T.
  • Ability to work B-shift regularly, with occasional overtime or weekends based on build needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience assembling aerospace vehicles, including installing large structures and subsystems on flight hardware, installation sequencing, interface checks, and system-level checkouts.
  • Experience with torque-critical joints, torque sequencing, lockwire, fastener selection, and installation verification.
  • Experience with drilling, reaming, countersinking, and flight-structure fastener-hole quality.
  • Experience routing and securing harnesses, mating connectors, bonding and grounding, and supporting avionics checkouts and functional tests.
  • Experience installing and verifying fluid components such as valves, regulators, tubing, ducts, and fittings, including leak checks and proof testing.
  • Experience handling and installing precision-clean hardware, contamination control, and cleanroom or controlled-area practices.
  • Experience with TPS application, inspection, and repair processes.
  • Experience with structural bonding, including surface preparation, adhesive application, cure control, and bond inspection.
  • Experience leading root cause analysis using methods such as 5 Whys, fishbone, or 8D, and ensuring corrective actions prevent recurrence.
  • Experience with process development, 5S, and Lean, including improving build flow, reducing cycle time and waste, and establishing organized, standardized work areas.
  • Experience designing, building, or modifying tooling, fixtures, and handling equipment, and implementing new tooling on the production floor.
  • Experience working directly with technicians on the floor to solve problems in real time and keep production moving.
  • Experience with manufacturing engineering responsibilities, including nonconformance systems, MES/eWO, PLM, and BOM reconciliation.
  • Experience with JIRA, Confluence, or similar tracking tools.
  • Comfort making decisions independently with limited support during off-hours.

Responsibilities

  • Provide real-time shipside support to technicians, quality personnel, and production leads during GS2 builds.
  • Write and revise work instructions for torque and fastener installation; drilling, reaming, and hole preparation; avionics, harness, and sensor installation, bonding, routing, and connector mating; aerospace hardware and fluid component installation; TPS application and repair; and structural bonding and adhesive processes.
  • Own and optimize build processes to improve safety, quality, and efficiency on the production floor.
  • Correct work-instruction issues on the floor, including redlines, clarifications, errors, and sequencing changes.
  • Initiate and document nonconformances; support root cause analysis, recommend dispositions, and execute corrective actions.
  • Identify build roadblocks involving parts, tooling, ground support equipment, documentation, or engineering holds, and escalate them to the appropriate owner.
  • Track recurring issues across builds and drive fixes that reduce redlines, nonconformances, and cycle time.
  • Work with Design, Quality, Production Control, and Supply Chain to resolve issues and implement cycle-time improvements.
  • Identify tooling and fixture needs and coordinate repairs or new designs.
