This role facilitates and manages the flow and identification of material through the rolling mill finishing department. The Manufacturing Associate will complete a range of duties in a regular finishing crew to provide relief periods for the respective occupants of operator positions. This involves simple to moderately complex duties, requiring considerable care in accuracy, alertness, and safety. As a relief operator for all machines in the finishing department, the associate must be versatile to adequately carry out normal machine operator duties, including straightening, shearing, stacking, and building operations, and to troubleshoot and repair banding and tying machines. The role requires close attention and care in observing operations and guiding material, making adjustments to tying or strapping machines, and responding quickly to material jams and equipment malfunctions. The associate will operate tying/strapping and bundle discharge machines, secure bundles for storage or transfer, and stock and feed machines with wire. They will also activate machines for spacing and placement of binding material, observe material for blemishes or flaws, and operate radio pendant overhead cranes and forklifts for material movement and housekeeping. During continuous operation, the associate will troubleshoot equipment failures of banding and tying machines, perform minor maintenance and repairs, conduct daily maintenance inspection checks, perform preventive maintenance, and coordinate the reloading of strapping and wiring material. Additional duties include staging parts and equipment for changeovers, assisting with changeover activities, assisting maintenance personnel with preventive and breakdown maintenance, removing and cutting cobbles, preparing and attaching identification tags, tying off heat and lot run ends, and counting bundle pieces. The role involves preparing accurate production records using basic math skills, including calculating tonnage to pound conversions, piece count per bundle, and explaining discrepancies. The associate will maintain close contact with operators to coordinate tag changes for each heat and collect and review production reports from previous shifts, calculating tonnage produced. They will use hand tools to remove damaged pieces from machines and conveyor systems, manually stack and band products, and detect and report faulty material, environmental hazards, or improper equipment operation. Maintaining a clean work area and following all safety regulations are essential.
