About The Position

NHPR is seeking a managing editor to lead its flagship daily news magazines, Morning Edition and All Things Considered. The role involves guiding the magazines' evolution to align with a multiplatform audience strategy. The ideal candidate will have a proven history of producing compelling broadcast journalism, including interviews, breaking news, field pieces, and other segments. This position requires a strong vision for redefining local audio journalism to engage new audiences and foster collaboration across newsroom teams. The managing editor will manage a team of four (two hosts and two producers) and will be instrumental in talent development and hiring processes. This is a full-time, exempt, onsite role based in Concord, New Hampshire, reporting to the News Director. The budgeted salary range is $89,300 - $99,000, with compensation also considering internal equity and other factors.

Requirements

  • Seven to ten years of experience in audio journalism, including reporting, producing and/or editing for broadcast.
  • Three to five years leading and managing a team and inspiring them to produce their best work.
  • Excellent editorial judgment and attention to detail.
  • Ability to train less experienced staff and to challenge staff with more experience.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • B.A. in relevant field or equivalent work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all editorial aspects of NHPR's morning and afternoon weekday news magazines.
  • Manage a team of hosts, producers, interns and fellows, including training, goal setting, performance management, professional mentorship, and editorial guidance.
  • Serve as lead editor on stories, interviews, and other broadcast segments from pitch through final draft.
  • Guarantee the on-time, flawless delivery of audio to multiple platforms.
  • Manage live and/or remote broadcasts, including election night, live debates and forums, and other special programming.
  • Serve as the NHPR newsroom's lead on assorted administrative tasks, including hiring, onboarding and scheduling.
  • Oversee and/or collaborate on special projects and series as appropriate.
  • Participate in and lead group pitch meetings, storyboards, and edits.
  • Work closely with our digital and audience teams to translate our audio segments to engaging stories for digital and social platforms.
  • Partner with the News Director on improving workflows, professional development and other operational leadership tasks in the newsroom.
  • As needed, participate in station fundraising activities.
