About The Position

Responsible for the management of daily activities performed in the editorial unit for NASW Press journals, books, and ancillary products. Work activities are performed under general supervision.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated management and supervisory skills.
  • Substantial knowledge of book and journal publishing.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Production and financial management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Command of the English language.
  • Knowledge of editing procedures, production techniques, printing processes, graphics and design, print production, and all related publishing procedures and processes.
  • Experience in planning and budgeting.
  • At least five years of related work experience.
  • Proven experience in publishing, management, or a supervisory capacity.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the editing and production of NASW journals, books, and other products as assigned.
  • Develops production schedules.
  • Handles correspondence on issues related to these products.
  • Works with authors and Editors-in-Chief to resolve submissions and editorial issues.
  • Coordinates design process with graphic designers for books and journals.
  • Supervises the daily work activities of assigned staff, determining their work assignments, schedules, and priorities.
  • Manages, trains, and assigns daily work activities of assigned subordinates.
  • Recommends personnel actions which affect assigned subordinates, including counseling, training, enforcing work rules, recommending disciplinary action, approving leave and timesheets, and evaluating performance.
  • Edits assigned manuscripts for journals, books, and other NASW publications.
  • Reviews and rewrites manuscripts to meet NASW's editorial specifications.
  • Manages the preparation of the editorial department’s annual operating budget, operating within the approved budget, and monitoring and tracking actual performance against budget.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations on related expenses.
  • Assists in the development and is responsible for the implementation of the NASW Press’s editorial and production policies, practices, and procedures, ensuring adherence and recommending changes.
  • Reviews manuscripts and proofreads page proofs, making corrections when necessary.
  • Assists with product uploads and updates to the NASW Press web site.
  • Serves as a staff resource to NASW editorial boards and committees, keeping committees informed on the status of assigned publications.
  • Assists in scheduling and arranging board and committee meetings, and in establishing meeting agendas.
  • As assigned, coordinates the work assignments of editorial freelancers, providing work instructions and checking work for quality and correctness.
  • Assists with coordinating the submission, evaluation, and/or review process of book proposals, when needed.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest technological developments in the publishing and printing industries.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the Press’s publishing processes and systems and recommends changes.
  • Works on marketing campaigns as part of the marketing team.
  • Works at exhibit booth at conferences.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Represents management at appropriate steps in grievance procedures.
  • May participate in contract negotiations with collective bargaining unit.
  • Manages editorial production process.
  • Manages the production schedules of assigned products.
  • Works with editorial boards and committees on related publications.
  • Works with outside vendors in development of products.
  • Works with NASW Press staff in keeping NASW Press web site updated.
