About The Position

Northstar Travel Group is seeking an experienced Managing Editor to lead editorial quality, editing standards, and newsroom operations for its Travel Weekly print and digital platforms. This role serves as the lead copy editor, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to editorial standards. The position involves overseeing production workflows, supporting daily newsroom management, and contributing to content strategy. The ideal candidate is a skilled editor, strong communicator, and organized leader with experience managing editorial teams, meeting deadlines, and upholding journalistic integrity. This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, splitting time between the Rutherford, New Jersey office and remote work.

Requirements

  • 5 years’ related newspaper, copyediting and supervisory experience.
  • Travel industry background with knowledge of current travel industry trends and issues.
  • Strong communication and management skills with the ability to delegate assignments and direct the work of others.
  • Proficiency with web content management systems, Adobe Creative Suite, and InDesign/InCopy.
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage competing deadlines.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong digital literacy and familiarity with online research and publishing tools.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead editor for Travel Weekly content across all channels.
  • Edit news and feature stories for content, clarity, accuracy, grammar, and style.
  • Assign editing and editorial tasks to team members.
  • Write compelling headlines, captions, and display copy.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Director to ensure images and visual elements accurately support editorial content.
  • Edit opinion pieces, forum content, and op-eds.
  • Proofread newsletters and eletters, including daily and weekend publications.
  • Maintain and update the Travel Weekly Stylebook.
  • Establish and enforce editorial, grammar, and style guidelines across print and digital platforms.
  • Review and proofread content edited by other team members to ensure consistency with Travel Weekly standards.
  • Oversee production of Travel Weekly’s print publication.
  • Monitor page proofing, corrections, and transmission procedures.
  • Execute close-out responsibilities on press days.
  • Supervise page-building processes to ensure design and layout standards are followed.
  • Build layouts when necessary, in the absence of the Creative Director.
  • Optimize digital content for web performance and contribute ideas to improve audience engagement and site traffic.
  • Oversee eletter staff and contributors, including hiring, onboarding, training, and ongoing development.
  • Manage editorial schedules and assist with editing and production as needed.
  • Oversee editing, layout, and production of major special issues, including Power List, Travel Industry Survey (TIS), and other special projects.
  • Assist the Director of Editorial Strategy with day-to-day newsroom management.
  • Serve as the operational lead for the newsroom in the Director’s absence.
  • Coordinate with reporters to track assignments, coverage plans, and newsroom staffing needs.
  • Maintain and update editorial planning and assignment documents daily.
  • Contribute editorial insight, news judgment, and story ideas to enhance coverage.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, current events, and global developments impacting the travel industry.
  • Participate in editorial planning meetings and discussions regarding Travel Weekly’s content strategy.
