About The Position

Reading Partners is changing the education landscape by addressing the literacy crisis through community volunteers providing one-on-one tutoring. The Managing Director of Financial Planning & Analysis (MDFP&A) is a key member of the Finance and Accounting team, leading the FP&A function and reporting to the Chief Financial and Operations Officer (CFOO). This role provides business and financial advice to the CFOO and budget leaders in a national, distributed organization. Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and financial reports/analyses for national departments and regional Executive Directors, acting as a liaison between national and regional teams, and supporting month-end close processes. The position manages a team of two to ensure efficient and sustainable allocation of financial resources to maximize student outcomes. The role also involves managing the Senior Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis and collaborating on future Finance team staffing. The work supports leaders in making effective budgetary decisions by providing high-quality, accurate, and timely financial information and advice. This position is remote but requires candidates to reside within specific Reading Partners’ operating locations: Southern California (Los Angeles Metropolitan Area preferred), the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Washington State, South Carolina, or Virginia.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of relevant job experience in financial planning and analysis (FP&A) in roles with increasing responsibility.
  • 3+ years of people management and leadership experience in the finance sector.
  • Experience managing a team within a finance department.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to successfully convey financial concepts to non-finance colleagues.
  • Ability to adapt to changing organizational needs and priorities and juggle multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Strategic and analytical thinking abilities and strong problem-solving skills.
  • A bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting.
  • Excellent professional judgment.
  • At least an intermediate experience level in Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to prove eligibility to work legally in the U.S. and that you are at least 18 years of age.

Nice To Haves

  • Nonprofit experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of financial planning software (e.g. Adaptive, Hyperion, Cognos) strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce a plus.
  • An MBA or advanced degree in Finance or Accounting.
  • An AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, or other national service alum.
  • Experience working in launch or growth phases of organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide key support to the CFOO with the annual strategic planning process.
  • Build financial models and forecasting tools for long-term scenario planning.
  • Lead the creation of the annual budget and develop prudent forecasts for a $33 million budget.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and monthly forecast process.
  • Prepare monthly reporting of financial performance and variance analysis by region/function.
  • Support the executive leadership team in the stewardship of key financial metrics.
  • Collaborate with budget owners, development teams, and the regional operations team on cash flow forecasts.
  • Partner with national and regional leaders to provide financial support and guidance.
  • Advise budget leaders on fiscal operating decisions and collaborate to achieve financial sustainability goals.
  • Analyze trends in spending and behavior to maximize resource allocation and results.
  • Prepare financial reports and materials for quarterly Board of Directors meetings.
  • Oversee operational excellence by evaluating, refining, creating, and supporting systems and processes.
  • Enhance the use of Adaptive Insights (financial planning software), including potential integration with third-party software, developing new reports, and creating financial dashboards.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports to funders/donors.
  • Manage all financial information, including support documentation for grant reports and proposals.
  • Track and report compliance with line of credit covenants.
  • Guide employee performance management and support professional development of team members.
  • Lead planning and facilitation of team and department meetings.
  • Participate in Leadership Team (LT) meetings, retreats, and collaborative spaces.
  • Collaborate closely with national departments to support financial reporting, documentation, and processes.
  • Establish working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively and tell a compelling story through data to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Anticipate future needs and challenges/opportunities in planning and decision-making.
  • Identify and execute tasks proactively.
