About The Position

The Legal team partners with TransUnion’s business and technology organizations to enable responsible innovation, manage legal and regulatory risk, and support compliant, data-driven solutions. This role sits within the Legal organization and provides dedicated legal advisory support for Income & Employment Verification (VOIE) solutions within Canada and South Africa, working closely with Product, Technology, Privacy, Compliance, and business teams. The role reports into Legal leadership and operates as a high-autonomy individual contributor, collaborating with regional stakeholders and partner functions in a matrixed environment. This role exists to provide deep legal subject-matter expertise to ensure Income & Employment Verification solutions in Canada and South Africa are designed, delivered, and operated in alignment with applicable legal and regulatory requirements, while supporting business objectives and responsible data use.

Requirements

  • Experience advising products that leverage sensitive consumer or employment data, supporting compliant execution in regulated environments.
  • Working knowledge of PIPEDA, provincial privacy laws, POPIA, and related consumer reporting and data-use requirements, applied to real‑world product and operational decisions.
  • 10–14+ years of legal experience supporting regulated, technology‑enabled, or data‑driven businesses, with demonstrated ability to operate independently as a senior subject‑matter expert.
  • Experience reviewing and advising on technology, data, and partnership agreements, with an understanding of scalability, operational risk, and regulatory considerations.
  • Juris Doctor (JD from an accredited law school; active license to practice law or ability to maintain licensure.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex legal and regulatory requirements and apply them to technology‑enabled, data‑driven products.
  • Experience reviewing product data flows, consent models, and system workflows at a conceptual and advisory level.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain legal risks and requirements clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Comfort working with enterprise legal tools and documentation systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting VOIE, credit reporting, identity, payroll, or HR‑technology solutions.
  • Familiarity with collaborating alongside Privacy, Data Governance, and Compliance teams in regulated environments.
  • Experience working in matrixed, cross‑functional organizations with multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Interest in emerging privacy, data protection, and responsible data‑use practices.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a legal subject-matter expert supporting VOIE products and initiatives in Canada and South Africa, providing advisory guidance on privacy, consumer reporting, consent models, and data-use requirements.
  • Advise Product, Technology, Operations, Privacy, and Compliance teams on legal considerations impacting VOIE product design, enhancements, and market execution.
  • Apply legal judgment to assess complex regulatory issues and recommend compliant, practical approaches within established enterprise legal frameworks.
  • Provide subject-matter guidance on applicable laws and regulations, including PIPEDA and provincial privacy laws in Canada, and POPIA and related requirements in South Africa.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to review data flows, consent mechanisms, disclosures, and verification workflows for regulatory alignment.
  • Support regulatory readiness activities by assisting with responses to regulatory inquiries, audits, or examinations related to VOIE, in coordination with Compliance and senior Legal leadership.
  • Provide review and guidance on VOIE-related agreements within regional scope, including payroll or HCM provider contracts, verifier agreements, and data-use arrangements.
  • Identify legal risks related to data accuracy, access permissions, partner ecosystems, and operational processes, and advise on mitigation strategies.
  • Support dispute resolution, reinvestigations, and legal escalations related to VOIE products, escalating issues with broader implications as appropriate.
  • Collaborate across functions to translate complex legal requirements into clear, actionable guidance for business and technical stakeholders.
