About The Position

The Manager Trauma Services is responsible for all activities related to the hospital's Trauma Program. This role directs and organizes the services and systems necessary for a multidisciplinary approach to providing care to trauma patients. The Manager ensures full and seamless integration of all operational components, eliminating variation and aligning strategic and operational processes. A key accountability is ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies. Maintaining Level I Trauma designation is another large focus of the Trauma Services Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing Required
  • 5 Years Trauma related experience which includes at least 3 years direct clinical care Required
  • RN - Registered Nurse Licensed in the State of Texas Upon Hire Required
  • BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly Required
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support within 90 Days of hire Required
  • Other Trauma Outcome Performance Improvement Course or Trauma Coordinator Core Course Upon Hire Required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively and professionally across disciplines and with a variety of distinct constituents as well as the ability to articulate complex information in understandable terms.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across and beyond the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and coach for results.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead organizational initiatives, accomplish results, and achieve measurable outcomes or goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction for the hospital's trauma program, delegating activities as required for safe, efficient, and effective operations.
  • Coordinates management across the continuum of trauma care, including planning and implementation of clinical protocols and practice management guidelines, monitoring care of in-hospital patients, and serving as a resource for clinical practice.
  • Monitors and evaluates the continuum of trauma care from EMS entry to discharge.
  • Ensures implementation of policies, procedures, and standards that direct operations, create operational efficiency, and ensure regulatory compliance of the trauma program.
  • Assists in developing interdisciplinary policies, procedures, and standards that direct operations and facilitate coordination of care.
  • Develops and implements operating plans to ensure program objectives are realized.
  • Collaborates and cultivates strong working relationships across disciplines and with all levels of leadership.
  • Responsible for the operation and oversight of the Trauma Registry.
  • Represents the entity trauma program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster optimal trauma care.
  • Works with EMS agencies serving the trauma population.
  • Provides direction in emergency or crisis situations.
  • Maintains current knowledge regarding disaster preparedness and emergency management.
  • Directs community trauma education and prevention programs.
  • Establishes community relationships that enhance program visibility.
  • Participates in the development of trauma care systems at the community, State, and/or National levels.
  • Develops processes to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies (TJC, American College of Surgeons, entity leadership, etc.) using shared decision making.
  • Ensures operations are carried out in compliance with regulations.
  • Works collaboratively with medical staff to validate and sustain compliance with regulatory/accreditation standards.
  • Monitors clinical documentation through routine audits to ensure compliance with applicable federal/state guidelines and accreditation requirements or standards.
  • Identifies gaps and implements remediation plans as necessary.
  • Investigates and responds to matters of concern related to alleged violations, taking corrective action as necessary, in collaboration with entity Compliance.
  • Consults with Human Resources as appropriate regarding potential disciplinary action.
  • Provides regular reports to leadership regarding trauma program compliance.
  • Creates a culture of continuous improvement and accountability, ensuring the integration of quality and performance improvement into operations.
  • Supervises the collection, coding, and scoring of trauma data.
  • Develops processes for validation of the data.
  • Utilizes the trauma registry to facilitate research, performance improvement activities, and trend reports.
  • Analyzes data, identifies trends/areas for improvement in processes, structures, and systems impacting trauma care patient outcomes; develops a plan to close gaps and sustain gains as appropriate.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures as well as safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines.
  • Active involvement in research projects including the analysis and distribution of findings.
  • Implements evidence-based and best practices as it relates to providing excellent care in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
  • Identifies key performance indicators that need to be monitored and evaluated.
  • Operationally responsible for the financial performance, including operating and capital budgeting for the trauma program.
  • Promotes activities to reduce costs, enhance revenues, and achieve operational efficiency.
  • Manages the approved budget through frequent and regular monitoring.
  • Implements written action plans to address variances, adjusting strategies as needed to meet budgetary expectations.
  • Considers operational outcomes and financial implications when making recommendations to implement new services or modify current programs.
  • Manages staffing levels consistent with volumes.
  • Recruits and retains a quality workforce.
  • Provides a work environment that attracts and retains staff.
  • Accountable for orientation, continuing education, and competency verification for all staff.
  • Ensures Human Resource metrics (i.e., retention, vacancy rates, etc.) meet established targets.
  • Promotes and fosters a diverse, highly engaged, and collaborative work environment within areas of responsibility.
  • Utilizes workforce metrics such as vacancy, retention, and engagement to monitor, identify, and respond to workforce trends.

  • Conducts regular meetings, informs the team of changes in policy or procedure, and provides information regarding the overall strategic mission, vision, and direction of the hospital.

  • Ensures employee engagement survey participation rates and results meet established goals.
  • Ensures mandatory requirements are complete and required licensures, certifications, and/or registries are current and in good standing.
  • Maintains compliance with hospital and system policies.
  • Monitors and manages performance using the disciplinary process as appropriate.
