About The Position

MIGA’s Economics and Sustainability Department (MIGES) is responsible for ensuring that MIGA-supported projects comply with the Agency’s environmental and social (E&S) sustainability framework and contribute to sustainable development outcomes. The Sector Manager, Sustainability, Industries (MIGS2), will provide strategic leadership and managerial oversight for all environmental and social work related to projects within the INFRA and MAS sectors. The position will also contribute to policy development, innovation, knowledge management, and institutional strengthening related to MIGA’s sustainability agenda.

Requirements

Advanced degree( Master’s or PhD) in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Sustainable Development, or a related field.
Minimum 12 years of progressively responsible international experience in environmental and social sustainability within public sector institutions, private sector organizations, and/or multilateral development finance institutions.
Extensive experience developing and implementing environmental and social management systems, action plans, monitoring frameworks, and compliance programs.
Demonstrated expertise in environmental and social due diligence across infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, and services sectors.
Proven experience managing complex projects involving multiple stakeholders and challenging sustainability issues.
Strong experience working in developing countries, fragile and conflict-affected situations, and limited-capacity environments.
Practical expertise in applying IFC/MIGA Performance Standards and related sustainability frameworks.
Experience addressing issues related to resettlement, livelihoods restoration, Indigenous Peoples, labor, community health and safety, and gender-related risks.
Demonstrated success leading multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
Understanding of political risk insurance and credit enhancement products is highly desirable
Proficiency in English is required, working knowledge of French or/and Spanish is preferred.
Advanced knowledge of environmental and social sustainability principles and practices.
Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving capabilities.
Excellent stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills.
Ability to influence senior decision makers and build consensus across institutional boundaries.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

Lead team of highly motivated E&S Specialists, inspiring and influencing team to achieve high standards throughout their work product and engagements with other team members, across MIGA, the WBG and with clients.
Be a strong role-model and create a team environment with emphasis on trust, decency, teamwork, driving change and focus on delivery with urgency and impact.
Manage the unit staff, including recruitment, defining work programs, determining required team member skills and competencies, and providing frequent, timely and honest feedback on strengths, opportunities, potential, gaps, and growth opportunities.
Support full implementation of the WBG career framework, including timely goal setting, feedback, career planning and talent management.
Support strengthened coordination and integration with the WBG E&S function.
Support the growth and decentralization of MIGA’s E&S team, as the Guarantees Platform expands, and continuing to build strong connections to the wider World Bank Group E&S teams.
Lead the team on strategic, precedent setting, and/or transformational transactions in Industries and provide strategic leadership for new industry/product solutions and offerings that fit the needs of the client and align with MIGA’s Sustainability Policy and Performance Standards.
Manage MIGA’s E&S risk by ensuring consistent and high-quality application of MIGA’s Sustainability Framework’ or ‘in line with MIGA’s Sustainability Policy.
Support MIGA/ WBG Guarantee Platform (GP) to achieve operational growth and sustainability targets with enhanced attention to risk and agile, impactful approaches.
Advise, clear and lead the E&S due diligence processes for WBG guarantee projects processed under the GP.
Lead monitoring of E&S aspects of active WBG guarantees portfolio according to MIGA and WB procedures with enhanced attention to risk and resolving issues as they arise.
Provide guidance to MIGA Management on E&S performance and issues in portfolio (including High Risk List and projects in material non-compliance).
Provide guidance and clear relevant E&S input to self-evaluations and thematic evaluations and, in cooperation with the MIGA Evaluation Team.
Lead MIGA's institutional response to direct complaints and complaints to MIGA’s Independent Accountability Mechanism.
Lead the development and enhancement of MIGA’s environmental and social policies, procedures, frameworks, and operational guidance.
Promote knowledge sharing and collaboration across MIGA and the World Bank Group.
Facilitate peer learning and technical discussions among internal and external stakeholders; and document and disseminate lessons learned, emerging good practices, and sectoral knowledge.
Strengthen institutional knowledge and contribute to MIGA’s sustainability thought leadership.
