About The Position

The Sales and Use Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's sales, use, and related transaction tax compliance, planning, and audit functions across multiple jurisdictions. This role ensures accurate, timely filings, minimizes tax exposure, partners with cross-functional teams on system and process improvements, and serves as the company's subject matter expert on indirect tax matters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 6–8 years of progressive sales and use tax experience in a corporate tax department, public accounting firm, or combination of both.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-state sales and use tax compliance and audits.
  • Strong working knowledge of US state and local indirect tax laws, including post-Wayfair economic nexus rules.
  • Hands-on experience with tax compliance software (Avalara, Vertex, Sovos, or OneSource) and major ERP systems.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, large data sets); comfort working with tax data extracts and reconciliations.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the preparation, review, and timely filing of multi-state sales, use, and gross receipts tax returns, including monthly, quarterly, and annual filings.
  • Oversee remittance of tax payments and reconciliation of tax liability accounts to the general ledger.
  • Monitor nexus thresholds (economic and physical) and ensure timely registration in new jurisdictions following Wayfair and ongoing legislative changes.
  • Maintain exemption and resale certificate processes, including collection, validation, and renewal.
  • Prepare and review business and occupational license filings, unclaimed property filings, and other indirect tax returns as required.
  • Manage state and local sales and use tax audits, including responding to information requests, negotiating with auditors, and resolving assessments.
  • Identify, document, and remediate areas of indirect tax exposure; develop and implement voluntary disclosure agreements where appropriate.
  • Maintain documentation supporting tax positions for indirect tax processes and controls.
  • Research and interpret state and local tax laws, regulations, and rulings; assess the impact of new legislation on the business.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on taxability of products, services, and transactions, including new product launches, M&A activity, and expansion into new jurisdictions.
  • Identify opportunities for tax savings, including refund claims, credits, incentives, and process improvements.
  • Own configuration and ongoing maintenance of tax engine and compliance software (Avalara) and integration with ERP systems (MS Dynamics).
  • Partner with IT, Accounting, Billing, Procurement, and Legal teams to ensure correct tax determination on sales and purchases.
  • Drive automation and continuous improvement of indirect tax processes, controls, and documentation.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop indirect tax staff; set priorities, review work, and manage performance.
  • Build strong working relationships with external advisors, auditors, and taxing authorities.
