Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in residential mortgage underwriting with demonstrated supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian residential mortgage underwriting principles, OSFI B-20 regulatory frameworks, and credit risk management.
  • Proficiency with Mortgage Origination Systems (MOS), Filogix/Expert, and MS Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, communication, and team management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP) designation or related industry certifications.
  • Experience in alternative or non-prime residential mortgage lending.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and optimize daily residential mortgage underwriting operations, managing workflow allocation and queue distribution to consistently achieve targeted service level agreements (SLAs) and turnaround times.
  • Evaluate and render credit decisions on complex or high-value residential mortgage applications exceeding direct reports' authority levels, ensuring alignment with Questbank credit policies and risk tolerance guidelines.
  • Manage, coach, and mentor a team of Mortgage Underwriters, fostering continuous professional development, high engagement, and operational excellence through regular performance monitoring and constructive feedback.
  • Oversee strict adherence to regulatory standards and credit risk policies, including OSFI B-20 guidelines, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and Anti-Terrorist Financing (ATF) requirements across all underwriting activities.
  • Conduct ongoing quality assurance audits and peer reviews on underwritten mortgage files to maintain high data accuracy, identify training gaps, and uphold underwriting standard controls.
  • Serve as the primary operational point of contact and escalation key for sales, broker distribution channels, fulfillment teams, and credit risk partners to resolve escalated deal structures or process bottlenecks.
  • Identify opportunities for operational process improvement and workflow automation within the mortgage origination system (MOS) to enhance underwriting efficiency and risk assessment capability.
  • Partner with Senior Management and Credit Risk leadership to recommend credit policy adjustments, review portfolio performance trends, and support audit readiness for regulatory reviews.
