About The Position

Scribd, Inc. is seeking a Design Manager to lead their UGC Product Design team. This role is critical as User Generated Content (UGC) is a strategically important and rapidly evolving area for Scribd, encompassing trust, discovery, creation tools, and the user lifecycle across Scribd and Slideshare. The role will also focus on leveraging AI for richer discovery and new engagement methods. The manager will be responsible for team performance, clarity, and execution, setting high standards for thinking and delivery, focusing on complex problems, and translating ambitious ideas into product impact. They will also contribute to strategy, influence team workflows, and foster an environment where senior designers can excel. The ideal candidate enjoys leading designers through complex problem spaces and turning innovative ideas into usable experiences.

Requirements

  • Track record of raising the bar for senior designers, including direct performance conversations.
  • 8+ years of product design experience.
  • 3+ years of people management experience.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguous, cross-functional spaces where problem definition is part of the work.
  • Experience leading teams in complex or system-heavy product areas.
  • Strong product judgment and strategic thinking, especially in ambiguity.
  • Ability to partner effectively across functions and stakeholders.
  • Clear communicator who can align teams and move decisions forward.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the UGC design team, managing and mentoring senior product designers.
  • Define and reinforce standards for design excellence at each level.
  • Provide direct, specific feedback to improve thinking and outcomes.
  • Own career development and performance management for the team.
  • Partner closely with the Principal UGC Design Lead to challenge thinking and ensure alignment.
  • Bring clarity and focus to ambiguous problems and drive simplification.
  • Translate strategy into clear priorities, resourcing, and sequencing.
  • Strengthen planning, handoff, and cross-team alignment.
  • Help the team adapt to evolving tools, including the use of AI for faster processes and ambitious prototyping.
  • Ensure consistency and quality across surfaces, tools, and workflows.
  • Shape team rituals that reinforce clarity, ownership, and high standards.
  • Hold designers accountable to role expectations and impact.
  • Create an environment of psychological safety paired with high performance.
  • Contribute to Design organization hiring, calibration, and bar-raising efforts.
