Manager, Payments and Fraud Analytics

AXS•Los Angeles, CA
•$95,000 - $109,000•Onsite

About The Position

AXS is seeking a Manager, Payments and Fraud to lead macro-level analytics for payment performance and fraud risk. The role applies advanced SQL, data visualization, and payments expertise to identify ways to increase authorization and conversion, reduce processing costs, prevent fraud and chargeback losses, and improve payment reliability across markets, channels, and providers. Rather than reviewing individual transactions for accept-or-decline decisions, the role analyzes portfolio trends and translates findings into business, product, routing, and risk recommendations. The manager partners with payment networks and providers, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, ACI, Braintree, and Stripe, as well as internal Product, Engineering, Finance, Operations, and Fraud Prevention teams. The role initially leads through expertise and cross-functional influence, with expected direct people-management responsibilities as the analytics team grows.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Finance, Business, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • 4–6 years of hands-on advanced SQL analysis using large transaction-level datasets and developing dashboards or data visualizations for business decisions.
  • 4–6 years of progressive experience in payments analytics, fraud analytics, payment operations, risk, or a closely related field.
  • 4–6 years of experience leading complex cross-functional initiatives, coordinating analysts’ work, or managing and developing team members.
  • Advanced SQL skills, including joining, validating, segmenting, and interpreting large payment and fraud datasets.
  • Advanced data visualization and dashboard development skills using Tableau, Looker, or comparable tools; experience with Snowflake or a similar cloud data platform.
  • Strong knowledge of card payments, authorization and decline behavior, routing, processing economics, interchange and network fees, settlement, chargebacks, disputes, and fraud controls.
  • Working knowledge of payment networks and processors or gateways, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, ACI, Braintree, and Stripe.
  • Knowledge of tokenization, 3DS, alternative payment methods, cross-border payments, and the customer checkout experience.
  • Ability to frame ambiguous business questions, perform root-cause analysis, quantify financial and customer impact, and recommend practical actions.
  • Ability to communicate complex analysis to technical and nontechnical audiences and influence decisions across internal teams, vendors, and senior leadership.
  • Leadership skills to set priorities, establish standards, coordinate work, coach analysts, and build a high-performing analytics function as the team grows.

Responsibilities

  • Lead analysis of payment authorization, decline, conversion, routing, settlement, and processing-cost data; identify trends and quantify opportunities by market, issuer, network, gateway, payment method, and customer segment.
  • Analyze portfolio-level fraud, chargeback, dispute, and loss data; identify emerging patterns and control gaps, estimate financial exposure, and recommend changes to fraud strategies, rules, tools, and operating processes.
  • Build and maintain KPI definitions, SQL analyses, dashboards, and executive reporting for payment performance, fraud, chargebacks, costs, and customer impact; establish data-quality controls and measurement methods.
  • Develop business cases and lead cross-functional optimization initiatives, experiments, and post-implementation measurement for payment routing, authorization uplift, fraud controls, payment methods, tokenization, 3DS, and cross-border performance.
  • Monitor high-volume on-sales and material payment or fraud events; perform root-cause analysis, coordinate stakeholders, and translate incidents into corrective actions and longer-term improvements.
  • Partner with payment networks and providers to review performance, investigate issues, evaluate capabilities, and ensure accountability for agreed service and optimization actions.
  • Advise Product, Engineering, Finance, Operations, Fraud Prevention, and senior leaders on priorities, tradeoffs, and policy or process changes; communicate findings and gain support for recommendations with financial and customer impact.
  • Establish the analytics function’s operating model, priorities, documentation, and performance standards; coordinate analyst work and develop, coach, and manage direct reports as positions are added.
