About The Position

The RCM-Manager of Insurance/Benefits Verification for the Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) (which includes the MSHS and the Faculty Practice Plan) assumes complete accountability/responsibility for the direction and management of the insurance/benefit verification teams and supports staff in all areas assigned during hours of operation. Oversees the day-to-day operations, which includes but is not limited to ensuring accuracy and completeness of registration, insurance, and guarantor information, as well as compliance with all regulations pertaining to the process. This role ensures that all team members are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to maximize revenue, ensure regulatory compliance, and enhance the patient financial experience. Establishes a culture of service excellence, focusing on patient, provider and colleague satisfaction and engagement. Works collaboratively with clinical and provider staff to foster excellence in a manner that ensures patient quality and safety.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree; or High School Diploma/GED + Direct relevant experience in lieu of college degree (4+ years overseeing financial clearance functions).
Minimum of 5 years directly related experience.
Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience in physician practice or revenue cycle operations within a hospital or large health system.
Proven ability to motivate teams and deliver consistent best practice performance.
Demonstrated success in a large not-for-profit/academic health system facility or multi-entity revenue cycle environment.
Deep familiarity with financial clearance functions within revenue cycle. Ideally across Hospital Billing (HB) and Professional Billing (PB) spectrums.
Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with management and other leaders, along with the ability to communicate concepts to others in meaningful ways.
Strong leadership skills to motivate teams’ performance towards excellence using team concepts and consensus-building management styles.
Demonstrated ability to engage in positive, powerful persuasion with individuals or groups with diverse opinions and/ or agendas, leading to outcomes that meet identified goals.
Ability to enlist cooperation and build teams committed to carrying out initiatives in environments that may be resistant to change and not under the incumbent’s direct authority.

Responsibilities

Conduct regular skills assessments to identify knowledge gaps and training priorities across teams and establish mechanisms for increased training and skill development.
Proactively stay informed of and integrate all relevant federal, state, and payer-specific guidelines and compliance regulations (e.g., HIPAA, Medicare, Medicaid) into all standard operating practices.
Assign, monitor, and collaborate on developing a variety of learning pathways, including online modules, hands-on workshops, and mentorship programs, to accommodate diverse learning styles and schedules.
Monitor performance metrics and data to track productivity and performance against industry best practice benchmarks. Hold staff accountable to targeted performance / productivity.
Build strong, collaborative relationships with RCM leaders, IT, finance, and clinical department heads to ensure alignment of operational performance and system-wide priorities.
Hire, train, mentor, and provide guidance to team(s), fostering a culture of continuous learning and subject-matter expertise.
Work with RCM systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner) and IT teams to ensure standard work is aligned with system functionalities and to identify opportunities for workflow and performance improvements.
Utilize all dashboards, reports and other materials to prepare reporting on team performance for senior leadership on activities, outcomes, and progress toward goals.
Build, develop, and mentor a high-performing RCM operations team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Collaborate cross-functionally with clinical, operational, IT, and finance teams to align RCM initiatives with organizational goals.

Serve as subject-matter expert in payer rules, requirements, use of portals, and other operational requirements to secure revenue, and ensure standard work follows best practice.
