About The Position

The Manager of Public Programs leads the Public Programs department at the Orlando Science Center. This position reports directly to the Director of Programs. The daily functions of this position include overseeing the operations for the Public Programming team and ensuring high quality programming for OSC visitors. The Manager of Public Programs will be expected to lead a team of Full Time Science Program Interpreters, part-time staff, interns and volunteers, complete tasks with minimal supervision, and demonstrate excellent customer service skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in science education, biology, chemistry, physical science, physics, astronomy, or museum studies.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience teaching informally and providing exemplary customer service.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of project management and/or direct management experience.
  • Strong general science knowledge.
  • Employee must have a valid driver's license, maintain an acceptable driving record as stipulated by OSC’s insurance carrier, and have access to reliable, legal transportation that can be driven on behalf of OSC for business purposes.
  • Must be able to work weekends.
  • Works with a high degree of independence on multiple projects in parallel.
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in all Microsoft Office Software.
  • Must be highly motivated, organized, and demonstrate a willingness to adapt positively to corporate change.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience managing a team.
  • Theatrical skills and/or experience performing improv.
  • Experience speaking in front of large audiences is desirable.
  • Experience developing curriculum for informal science education facilities.
  • Background and experience in any of the following is preferred: planetarium, observatory, animal handling, chemistry labs, physics labs, nursing simulators, STEM, and inquiry-based learning projects, theatre management, and volunteer management.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees project development for Full-Time Science Program Interpreters to ensure that content development is delivered in a timely manner and adheres to a high standard of quality.
  • Reports regularly on project progress and oversees budgets and resource allocations as necessary.
  • Oversees programming events throughout the year.
  • Communicates updates and upcoming events within the organization to staff in a timely and efficient manner as well as visitors via website platform.
  • Performs regular performance evaluations on team members and volunteers.
  • Schedules, hires, and trains staff and volunteers for the Public Programming department.
  • Ensures all pertinent staff documents and training materials are updated as necessary.
  • Ensures website contains accurate programmatic information.
  • Manages the supplies and supply budget for the department to ensure supplies for the department are within budget and are being purchased in a timely manner.
  • Represents the Orlando Science Center in a professional manner with all guests and staff.
  • Works with Program Specialists to implement grant programming, specialty programming or training for the Public Programming department.
  • Safely operates OSC vehicle when delivering programs offsite.
  • Maintains a valid Florida’s driver’s license and acceptable driving record as stipulated by OSC’s insurance carrier.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
