About The Position

The Manager of Health Information Management (HIM) is responsible for the operational, regulatory, and performance oversight of HIM services across Marshall Health Network and its affiliated entities. This position provides leadership for Health Information Management operations, denials management, clinical validation and DRG appeals, data integrity, regulatory compliance, and HIM system optimization. The Manager collaborates with Coding, Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI), Revenue Cycle, Compliance, Information Technology, and Medical Staff leadership to improve documentation quality, coding accuracy, regulatory compliance, and financial performance.

Requirements

  • Degree in Health Information Technology from an American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) approved program or a bachelor's degree in a health-related field.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in Health Information Management within an acute care healthcare environment.
  • Experience with electronic health record implementation or conversion projects required.
  • Strong knowledge of Health Information Management operations, regulatory requirements, and healthcare documentation standards.
  • Experience with denials management, clinical validation, DRG validation, and revenue cycle collaboration.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, CMS, Joint Commission, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and lead system-wide operational improvement initiatives.

Nice To Haves

  • Active AHIMA credential (RHIA or RHIT) preferred.
  • Direct experience with Cerner implementation or conversion projects strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide system-wide leadership for Health Information Management operations, including document management, chart completion, release of information, transcription, and records management.
  • Standardize HIM workflows, policies, and processes across the health system.
  • Serve as the records custodian for patient medical records and as a subject matter expert on HIM operations and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee clinical validation and DRG validation denials, including appeal development, payer communication, denial trend analysis, and prevention strategies.
  • Lead HIM denials meetings and support initiatives to improve documentation, coding accuracy, and revenue cycle performance, including DNFB and DNFC metrics.
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, integrity, and accessibility of the electronic health record throughout the patient record lifecycle.
  • Oversee the enterprise Master Patient Index (MPI), including duplicate resolution, identity reconciliation, policy development, quality monitoring, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with Patient Access, Information Technology, Coding, CDI, Revenue Cycle, and clinical departments to support data integrity and optimize HIM-related systems and workflows.
  • Lead or support electronic health record optimization, upgrades, and other HIM technology initiatives.
  • Chair the Marshall Health Network Forms Committee.
  • Monitor key performance indicators, develop performance improvement initiatives, and prepare operational reports.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management for HIM supervisors, transcription staff, and the HIM Denials and Appeals team.
  • Assist the System Director of HIM with departmental budgeting, strategic planning, and organizational initiatives.
  • Participate in community outreach and engagement activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality and perform other duties as assigned.
