About The Position

Interstate Waste Services (IWS) is a leading provider of solid waste and recycling services in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut markets, with a rail-served landfill in Ohio. Founded in 1998, IWS combines the resources of a large company with the values of a family-run business, prioritizing safety and quality in its services for industrial, medical, and commercial/residential customers. The Manager of Fleet Maintenance is responsible for overseeing the Maintenance Shop and managing a team of technicians, welders, and administrative personnel. This role ensures the preventive maintenance and repair of fleet equipment, including trucks, containers, and other heavy-duty equipment, in compliance with safety, compliance, and regulatory standards. The manager provides direction to the maintenance team, implements and monitors maintenance policies and procedures, and reports on shop performance to leadership.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience as a Maintenance Manager or Maintenance Supervisor for a large fleet of vehicles or multiple site locations.
  • Knowledge and application of OSHA Haz Com and OSHA Lock Out Tag Out.
  • 3 years of leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and Microsoft Office.
  • Advanced Root Cause Problem Solving.
  • Effective and professional communications skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to anticipate business needs and plan accordingly to ensure efficient utilization of equipment, employees, and fiscal resources.
  • High level of analytical skills to develop a range of possible solutions.

  • Automotive Service Excellence T2 Diesel Engine, T Master Certified. T3 Drive T4 Brake TS Suspension and Steering.

Responsibilities

  • Provide directions to technicians, welders, and administrative personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and timely repair/maintenance work, reallocating resources among sites as appropriate.
  • Oversee coordination, planning, and scheduling of all repair work to increase productivity while managing department overtime.
  • Monitor shop operational performance and efficiency, taking action to redirect activities and reporting to leadership on performance.
  • Implement procedures for process/programmatic changes for improvement or efficiency.
  • Manage daily shop safety meetings, fleet walk-arounds, and coaching/counseling of maintenance team personnel.
  • Conduct corrective action when necessary, make hiring/termination decisions in concert with Human Resources and appropriate management.
  • Oversee employee training and performance evaluations, and evaluate/recommend personnel for merit increases, promotions, and job changes.
  • Maintain an ongoing preventive maintenance program for all shops within areas of responsibility.
  • Identify trends in road calls/breakdowns and oversee maintenance of building and other facility needs on site.
  • Control maintenance costs relating to personnel, purchasing, inventory control, and outsourcing of repairs.
  • Perform inspections of outside repairs and maintenance to ensure compliance with Company safety and compliance procedures and federal and state regulations.
  • Follow up on outside repairs and maintenance where appropriate.
  • Identify training opportunities and document issues, constructively discussing corrective action with maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Accountable for scheduled Quality Control Inspections, tracking issues and resolution to ensure work is properly completed in accordance with Company safety and compliance procedures, and federal and state regulations.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge of engine, emission systems, transmission, brake, hydraulic, and electrical systems of heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform advanced preventive and repair maintenance functions on-site and on-road, including advanced engine chassis repair, vehicle body control systems (hydraulics and electrical), heating and air conditioning systems, and welding for heavy equipment repair.
  • Manage related administrative matters for the team, including payroll, employee records, records of all preventive and corrective maintenance, recording information into Maintenance Software, preparing and submitting budgets, and setting departmental goals.
