About The Position

The Manager of Education and Professional Development leads the hospital-wide professional development and house education program. This role establishes annual priorities aligned with organizational goals, workforce needs, quality priorities, and regulatory requirements. The manager supervises, coaches, schedules, and evaluates assigned educators, instructors, preceptors, and support staff, establishing clear expectations, deliverables, and timelines. Responsibilities include developing and managing the education calendar, budget, learning resources, simulation supplies, equipment, and vendor relationships. The role also involves providing regular dashboards and reports on education completion, competency, participation, overdue requirements, program effectiveness, and improvement actions. A key aspect is conducting systematic assessments of learning, competency, and development needs across clinical, administrative, and support departments. The manager designs, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates new-employee orientation, nursing orientation, annual education, regulatory training, competency programs, leadership development, and department-specific learning, utilizing adult-learning principles and various delivery methods. Ensuring education is available across shifts and locations and promoting an inclusive learning environment are also crucial. The role partners with leaders to establish and maintain competencies and evidence-based practice standards, provides hands-on education for new equipment and workflows, and coordinates remediation when needed. Support for preceptor development, nurse residency, certification preparation, continuing education, and career-development pathways is also part of the role. The manager ensures education aligns with hospital policies, legal requirements, CMS conditions, accreditation standards, and safety priorities. They use audit findings and performance data to identify learning needs and interventions, maintain evidence of education completion, and support surveys and audits. Evaluating the effect of education on outcomes is also a responsibility. Collaboration with various departments like Human Resources, Quality, and IT is essential, as is administering learning-management-system functions and maintaining accurate education records. Building partnerships with academic institutions and external education partners is also a function of this role, alongside modeling ethical conduct.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Education, or related field (Preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (Required)
  • Active Tennessee registered nurse license or compact-state privilege (Required)
  • Basic Life Support Certification (Required Upon Hire)
  • Two years of leadership, supervisory, project leadership, or program-management experience is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead educators, influence interdisciplinary teams, manage multiple priorities, and evaluate education outcomes is required.

  • Conducts systematic assessments of learning, competency, and development needs across clinical, administrative, and support departments.

  • Partners with nursing and interdisciplinary leaders to establish, validate, and maintain role-specific competencies and evidence-based practice standards.
  • Provides or coordinates hands-on education for new equipment, technology, medications, procedures, workflows, and changes in standards of care.
  • Coordinates remediation, refresher training, reassessment, and escalation when required knowledge or skill expectations are not met.
  • Supports preceptor development, nurse residency, certification preparation, continuing education, and career-development pathways as assigned.
  • Ensures education reflects current hospital policies, legal requirements, CMS conditions, accreditation standards, safety priorities, infection prevention, privacy, and compliance expectations.
  • Uses audit findings, safety events, employee feedback, performance data, and leadership input to identify learning needs and targeted interventions.
  • Maintains evidence of education and competency completion and supports surveys, audits, corrective-action plans, and sustainment activities.
  • Evaluates the effect of education on knowledge, skills, behavior, compliance, safety, service, and organizational outcomes.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources, Quality, Risk, Compliance, Infection Prevention, Information Technology, Safety, physicians, nursing leaders, and department managers to address learning and competency needs.
  • Administers assigned learning-management-system functions, including course assignments, rosters, reminders, transcripts, completion records, and reporting.
  • Maintains accurate, current, confidential education records, course materials, competency documentation, and required reports.
  • Builds partnerships with academic institutions and external education partners to support clinical rotations, workforce pipelines, and continuing professional development.
  • Models ethical, respectful, responsive, and accountable conduct and performs other duties as assigned to support hospital-wide education and workforce readiness.
