About The Position

The Manager of Education and Professional Development leads the hospital-wide professional development and house education program. This role establishes annual priorities aligned with organizational goals, workforce needs, quality priorities, and regulatory requirements. The manager supervises, coaches, schedules, and evaluates assigned educators, instructors, preceptors, and support staff, establishing clear expectations, deliverables, and timelines. Responsibilities include developing and managing the education calendar, budget, learning resources, simulation supplies, equipment, and vendor relationships. The role also involves conducting systematic assessments of learning, competency, and development needs, designing, coordinating, delivering, and evaluating various educational programs such as new-employee orientation, nursing orientation, annual education, regulatory training, competency programs, leadership development, and department-specific learning. The manager ensures education is available across shifts and locations, promotes an inclusive learning environment, and partners with leaders to establish and maintain role-specific competencies and evidence-based practice standards. Additionally, the role ensures education aligns with current hospital policies, legal requirements, and accreditation standards, and manages assigned learning-management-system functions and education records.

Requirements

  • Two years of leadership, supervisory, project leadership, or program-management experience is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead educators, influence interdisciplinary teams, manage multiple priorities, and evaluate education outcomes is required.
  • Active Tennessee registered nurse license or compact-state privilege Required
  • Basic Life Support Certification Required Upon Hire
  • CPI Instructor certification required within six months of hire
  • Bachelor’s degree Nursing Required

Responsibilities

  • Leads the hospital-wide professional development and house education program and establishes annual priorities aligned with organizational goals, workforce needs, quality priorities, and regulatory requirements.
  • Supervises, coaches, schedules, and evaluates assigned educators, instructors, preceptors, and support staff; establishes clear expectations, deliverables, and timelines.
  • Develops and manages the education calendar, budget, learning resources, simulation supplies, equipment, and vendor relationships.
  • Provides regular dashboards and reports on education completion, competency, participation, overdue requirements, program effectiveness, and improvement actions.
  • Conducts systematic assessments of learning, competency, and development needs across clinical, administrative, and support departments.
  • Designs, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates new-employee orientation, nursing orientation, annual education, regulatory training, competency programs, leadership development, and department-specific learning.
  • Uses adult-learning principles and multiple delivery methods, including classroom, virtual learning, simulation, skills validation, coaching, and self-directed education.
  • Ensures education is available across shifts and locations and promotes an inclusive learning environment that supports participation and knowledge sharing.
  • Partners with nursing and interdisciplinary leaders to establish, validate, and maintain role-specific competencies and evidence-based practice standards.
  • Provides or coordinates hands-on education for new equipment, technology, medications, procedures, workflows, and changes in standards of care.
  • Coordinates remediation, refresher training, reassessment, and escalation when required knowledge or skill expectations are not met.
  • Supports preceptor development, nurse residency, certification preparation, continuing education, and career-development pathways as assigned.
  • Ensures education reflects current hospital policies, legal requirements, CMS conditions, accreditation standards, safety priorities, infection prevention, privacy, and compliance expectations.
  • Uses audit findings, safety events, employee feedback, performance data, and leadership input to identify learning needs and targeted interventions.
  • Maintains evidence of education and competency completion and supports surveys, audits, corrective-action plans, and sustainment activities.
  • Evaluates the effect of education on knowledge, skills, behavior, compliance, safety, service, and organizational outcomes.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources, Quality, Risk, Compliance, Infection Prevention, Information Technology, Safety, physicians, nursing leaders, and department managers to address learning and competency needs.
  • Administers assigned learning-management-system functions, including course assignments, rosters, reminders, transcripts, completion records, and reporting.
  • Maintains accurate, current, confidential education records, course materials, competency documentation, and required reports.
  • Builds partnerships with academic institutions and external education partners to support clinical rotations, workforce pipelines, and continuing professional development.
  • Models ethical, respectful, responsive, and accountable conduct and performs other duties as assigned to support hospital-wide education and workforce readiness.
