About The Position

Provides comprehensive leadership, management, and oversight of nursing operations within the Medical/Surgical, Critical Care, and Telemetry Care System departments. Directs and evaluates the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, and patient-centered nursing care, ensuring services are consistent with established nursing standards, evidence-based practices, medical directives, organizational policies, and applicable regulatory requirements. Oversees nursing staff performance, workflow, and clinical practices, and evaluates patient care outcomes and the effectiveness of services provided. Provides leadership and authority for the development, implementation, review, and continuous improvement of nursing standards of care, policies, procedures, and clinical practices for the assigned departments. Maintains 24-hour accountability for nursing operations, including workforce planning, staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation based on patient census, acuity, clinical needs, staff competencies, and operational requirements. Ensures appropriate staffing and continuity of care while promoting regulatory compliance, patient safety, quality improvement, and effective coordination of services across the departments.

Requirements

Minimum five (5) years of experience required.
State of Florida Registered Nurse License
BLS and ACLS certifications required.
NIH Stroke Scale Certification required within 30 Days of hire.

Responsibilities

Leads the development, implementation, review, and continuous improvement of nursing policies, procedures, standards of care, and clinical practices in collaboration with department leaders and medical staff, ensuring compliance with licensing requirements, regulatory standards, professional guidelines, and hospital expectations.
Oversees staff adherence to the Relationship and Results Oriented Healthcare (RROH C) Nursing Model, including recommended evidence-based best-practice bundles, and coaches staff to consistently incorporate these principles into patient care.
Ensures nursing care is patient- and family-centered, including appropriate participation in care planning, establishment of patient-focused goals, and communication regarding changes in condition, test results, or other significant clinical developments. Ensures physicians and appropriate next of kin are notified as required and that notifications are accurately documented.
Monitors compliance with hospital policies, nursing standards, National Patient Safety Goals, infection prevention practices, and other regulatory requirements; provides coaching, counseling, and corrective action as appropriate.
Leads department performance improvement activities by monitoring patient care outcomes, identifying opportunities for improvement, analyzing data, implementing interventions, and evaluating results over time. Engages staff in problem identification, data collection, assessment, follow-up, and sustained improvement.
Evaluates clinical processes and challenges staff to identify and implement modifications that improve the safety, quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of patient care. Develops and implements Critical Care programs and protocols consistent with national professional guidelines, including applicable AACN standards, and community standards of practice.
Manages department operations within established FTE, productivity, cost, and annual budget parameters; identifies and implements appropriate cost-containment and resource optimization opportunities without compromising patient care or safety.
Develops and communicates staffing plans for the Critical Care, Telemetry, and Medical/Surgical units based on patient volume, acuity, clinical needs, staff competencies, and operational requirements to ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix.
Identifies and plans for equipment, supplies, linen, and other resources necessary to support safe and effective patient care. Collaborates with appropriate leaders to optimize resource utilization and ensures equipment is maintained and used safely and efficiently to minimize unnecessary repairs and replacement.
Provides leadership, supervision, orientation, education, coaching, and mentoring to nursing staff, fostering a culture of safety, teamwork, accountability, professional growth, and compliance with hospital policies, National Patient Safety Goals, and infection prevention practices.
Maintains current job descriptions for department positions and assesses staff competency, knowledge, skills, and performance to ensure employees meet established job requirements and patient care needs.
Participates in recruitment and selection activities, including interviewing applicants and making hiring recommendations to the Director of Nursing.
Collaborates with Human Resources in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
Monitors employee performance, completes performance evaluations, recognizes effective performance, and identifies and addresses performance deficiencies through appropriate counseling, documentation, and performance improvement plans.
Completes payroll-related documentation and approves employee timecards in Kronos. Identifies staff education and development needs and coordinates appropriate internal and external learning opportunities, in-service education, coaching, and mentoring.
Maintains open and effective communication with staff regarding hospital and department activities, policies, procedures, expectations, and operational priorities. Promotes teamwork and collaboration among nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary care team through effective communication, critical thinking, and established teamwork processes.
Promotes positive patient relations and interdepartmental collaboration through communication, relationship building, service excellence, and effective team development.
Provides overall leadership and operational oversight for nursing functions within the Critical Care, Telemetry, and Medical/Surgical Care Units and serves as a clinical and managerial resource to nursing staff.
Conducts daily unit rounds to assess patient care, staffing, facility, equipment, and operational needs; promptly addresses identified concerns and follows through to resolution.
Reviews charts for new admissions and patients experiencing unusual occurrences and participates in patient care planning to promote continuity, safety, and appropriate clinical outcomes.
Assists with the management, investigation, documentation, and follow-up of incidents and accidents, including identification of contributing factors and implementation of appropriate notifications, interventions, and corrective actions.
Leads daily huddles and conducts staff meetings based on departmental needs to communicate priorities, address operational concerns, reinforce standards, and promote effective coordination of care.
Prepares and presents written and oral reports for the Director of Nursing and participates in inspections, surveys, investigations, and other activities conducted by regulatory and accrediting agencies.
Continually evaluates department operations, service utilization, staffing, workflows, and patient care needs to identify opportunities to improve services, enhance efficiency, expand appropriate services, or address underutilized services. Makes recommendations to the Director of Nursing regarding operational and service improvements.
Identifies, evaluates, and implements new technologies, equipment, clinical procedures, and evidence-based practices that promote efficiency, patient safety, quality, and effectiveness of care.
Participates in departmental budget development and strategic planning, evaluating opportunities to support growth in patient volume, services, quality initiatives, and clinical programs while aligning resources with organizational priorities.
Identifies services or programs that are not being effectively utilized and develops or recommends appropriate strategies to improve utilization, access, efficiency, and value.
Maintains professional knowledge and competency through continuing education and professional development and promotes ongoing learning through staff in-service education, coaching, mentoring, and other development activities.
Supports and demonstrates behaviors consistent with the hospital's mission, philosophy, standards, policies, procedures, and professional nursing codes of ethics.
Participates in emergency preparedness and response activities as required, including assignment to special needs or Red Cross shelters and other emergency duties associated with man-made or natural disasters, threats, or other community emergencies.
