About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is seeking a Manager of NDT and Industrial Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to be the technical owner of NDT Operations and industrial radiography radiation safety. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining the organization's NDT capabilities to ensure successful delivery of SPARC and to prepare for the future scaling for ARC power plants. The position involves overseeing the successful execution of all NDT inspections, managing the NDT technician team, and serving as the industrial Radiation Safety Officer for all onsite RT activities. The role requires interfacing with various departments and external stakeholders to ensure personnel are scheduled and assigned appropriately.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, Electrical, or related discipline)
  • At least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory capacity
  • 12+ years of NDT experience on critical components (e.g., heavy-wall welds, complex geometries, or other high-integrity applications)
  • 5+ years experience as a Radiation Safety Officer
  • Level 2 or 3 certification (ASNT, NAS 410, or ISO 9712) in 3 or more NDT methods
  • Level III certification in Radiographic Testing (RT)
  • Hands-on experience with industrial radiography using digital techniques (CR and/or DR)
  • Strong knowledge of relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASME Section V, VIII.2, and other applicable ASTM NDT standards).
  • GD&T and Metrology
  • Minitab or JMP, MS Excel (including VBA), MS Visio
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Perform activities such as standing, stooping, and sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call

  • Additional Level III certifications in ET, PT, VT
  • Experience with assembly of large metallic structures
  • Subject matter expertise across the full CFS technical portfolio: UT/UTPA, RT (CR & DR), ET, PT, MT, and VT

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain organizational NDT capabilities, identifying gaps in technology or competency and implementing solutions that scale from SPARC manufacturing and assembly into the future ARC fleet.
  • Serve as the Industrial Radiation Safety Officer for NDT radiography, owning the radiation protection program, licensing, regulatory interface, and incident response.
  • Act as the Responsible Level III and Certifying Authority, maintaining overall responsibility for the NDT personnel qualification and certification program.
  • Oversee NDT execution across CFS manufacturing, CFS-2 construction, tokamak assembly, and vendor sites, ensuring safety, compliance, and alignment with project schedules.
  • Oversee and audit NDT technicians to ensure examinations are conducted in accordance with work instructions and are aligned with engineering requirements & applicable codes and standards.
  • Work directly with the NDT engineering and training team to help establish technician training and competency to new procedures and standards.
  • Participate in establishing and maintaining training and qualification frameworks for NDT technicians, and provide ongoing technical support and troubleshooting.
  • Review and audit work order instructions and procedures to ensure the latest is used for examinations.
  • Use NDT results to inform nonconformances and RCCA, and drive the continuous improvement of NDT capabilities to feed lessons learned back into process and design improvements for future projects.
