About The Position

The manager acts as the technical supervisor for the molecular and microbiology testing areas. The manager performs a wide variety of administrative, fiscal, and technical activities to ensure the efficient and CAP compliant operation of the molecular and microbiology services. The manager is responsible for the supervision of all testing personnel assigned to the molecular and microbiology services. The molecular and microbiology manager functions as a consultant to the medical staff as well as other health care providers. The manager is responsible for inpatient and outpatient matters as it relates to molecular and microbiology testing responsibilities throughout the laboratory system. The manager collaborates with the Infection Control Program, responsible for the collection, assessment, and analysis of data regarding nosocomial infections, outbreaks and infection prevention. The manager works with the pharmacy department in establishing the antibiotic formulary and disseminating antimicrobial information to the medical staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Clinical Laboratory, Medical Technology, Chemical or Biological Science.
  • Five years of experience within a clinical or specialty laboratory (non-research).
  • At least two to three years of experience specifically in Molecular or Microbiology.
  • At least three years’ experience in a previous leadership role overseeing a combination of personnel and processes.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and regulatory compliance of laboratory operations.
  • Current MT/MLS/MB/M ASCP certification.
  • General knowledge of all types of clinical and anatomical laboratory procedures.
  • Knowledge of all regulatory compliance requirements including but not limited to CAP and CLIA.
  • Knowledge of managerial skills.
  • Understand expense control and cost savings initiatives.
  • Ability to support and drive innovation.
  • Ability to lead staff to embrace change.
  • Ability to understand and manage project implementation.
  • Must promote continuing education.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to write concise, grammatically correct and properly formatted policies, procedures, and reports to ensure standardized document control.
  • Ability to collect and evaluate data and write reports on which others will make decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as the technical supervisor for molecular and microbiology testing areas.

  • Functions as a consultant to medical staff and other healthcare providers.
  • Responsible for inpatient and outpatient matters related to molecular and microbiology testing responsibilities.
  • Collaborates with the Infection Control Program on data collection, assessment, and analysis of nosocomial infections, outbreaks, and infection prevention.
  • Works with the pharmacy department on antibiotic formulary and antimicrobial information dissemination.
  • Makes daily rounds in the lab to connect with the team and ensure support for operations, utilization, personnel, supplies, and atmosphere.
  • Develops and recommends department operating budget in conjunction with the Director of Laboratory Services.
  • Ensures department operates within budget.
  • Makes recommendations regarding purchase of capital equipment.
  • Completes pro forma and prepares budget request for capital equipment.
  • Makes recommendations regarding changes and/or additions to laboratory test procedures.
  • Keeps abreast of new medical advances and integrates new developments into laboratory plans.
  • Reviews and trends Quality Metrics and Safety Reporting Issues, collaborating to develop action plans.
  • Monitors Employee Engagement and develops action plans.
  • Gives presentations to medical staff, nursing service, and other departments.
  • Serves as a consultant to the medical staff and participates in medical education programs.
  • Attends laboratory manager meetings.
  • Participates on hospital committees.
  • Assures adequate staffing for expected workload.
  • Responsible for overall personnel development, training, and motivation.
  • Accountable for productivity in sections of responsibility.
  • Interviews, hires, evaluates, and terminates employees.
  • Manages and directs the department's interaction with colleges, training programs, and students.
  • Motivates and encourages staff to develop teamwork.
  • Ensures laboratory personnel maintain required certifications and complete continuing education.
  • Handles complaints regarding service problems.
  • Coordinates ordering supplies and determines efficient and economical utilization of supplies.
