About The Position

Save the Children has been fighting for the rights of children for over 100 years, focusing on the right to a healthy start in life, access to education, and a safe environment. The Manager of Health & Nutrition supports the health and nutrition systems and services within a program, guiding health and wellness curricula, program planning, policy development, and training. This role provides technical and management support to Head Start/Early Head Start programs to ensure effective coordination, implementation, and monitoring of health and nutrition services. The position contributes to program improvement through evaluation and self-assessment, and is responsible for establishing and maintaining a Health Services Advisory Committee (HSAC). As a frontline representative, the Manager ensures the safety and security of children and families, adheres to agency values, and is expected to prevent child abuse by minimizing risk, reporting concerns, and promoting awareness of child-safeguarding obligations.

Requirements

  • A minimum of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Certification/Diploma or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a health or nutrition-related field
  • At least three (3) years of relevant work experience in a position directly related to the provision and management of Health and Nutrition services for young children and their families.
  • Extensive knowledge of Head Start Program Performance Standards and health and nutrition services for infant, toddler, and preschool programs.
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite.
  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of administration, budgeting, purchasing systems management, and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated experience developing consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with young children.
  • Proven ability to exercise professional judgment and evaluation before making decisions.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, children, parents, and outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated successful ability to communicate and collaborate with individuals and teams at all levels—both internal and external.
  • Proven successful problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and evaluate systems for the delivery of health, nutrition and safety services, including center and home-based services.
  • Maintain accurate, objective, complete, timely, and well-organized child records related to health and nutrition, both on paper and in designated online systems, to meet federal, state, and program documentation requirements.
  • Research, evaluate, and prepare recommendations on health, nutrition, and safety curricula in collaboration with education staff to ensure compliance with Performance Standards and monitor implementation fidelity.
  • Monitor health and nutrition services throughout the program, collecting and using quality data to support effective practices that positively impact family and child outcomes, including school readiness.
  • Participate in the development of integrated school readiness plans.
  • Assist in the development of the program training plan, and facilitate/provide training, coaching, and technical assistance to staff, parents, and volunteers.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring health and nutrition budgets, and identify/prioritize needed materials and equipment in coordination with the supervisor.
  • Work cooperatively with staff to integrate health and nutrition services with education, disability, parent engagement, and family services.
  • Secure contracts and interagency agreements with community service providers to enhance local delivery of comprehensive services.
  • Analyze information and create/submit required reports.
  • Implement the health services advisory committee in collaboration with community specialists (e.g., medical, dental, speech, nutrition, mental health).
  • Oversee the Child Care Food Program, including planning menus, supervising USDA record-keeping, and submitting reports and funding applications.
  • Ensure the implementation of active supervision techniques to protect children's safety.
  • Work with the Management Team to ensure comprehensive and integrated child and family services in health.
  • Attend home visits, parent conferences, or health-related events as needed.
  • Visit each site and classroom regularly (4-6 hours per month per site) for observations, training, technical assistance, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Provide a newborn visit with each mother and baby to offer support and identify family needs.
  • Facilitate access to comprehensive services for enrolled pregnant women through referrals for nutritional counseling, food assistance, oral healthcare, and mental health services.
  • Oversee tracking of all related health and nutrition screenings and assessments and participate in local evaluation activities.
  • Ensure the mobilization and documentation of matching/in-kind funds.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families.
  • Perform other related tasks as needed.
