About The Position

The Jacksonville Public Library is actively seeking a Manager for Metadata and Cataloging. The position reports to the Senior Manager of the Library Collection and holds primary responsibility for the cataloging and materials processing functions of the Library and has ownership of day-to-day operations, strategy, and performance. The position leads and manages teams that complete cataloging, classification, and physical processing of library materials across all formats. This role ensures timely, accurate, and consistent access to the collection by managing workflows, supervising staff, and maintaining metadata standards that support both efficient material turnaround and strong discoverability for customers. The individual is expected to exercise sound judgment and initiative in driving outcomes. This position offers significant responsibility and requires proactive leadership and independent decision-making within the established guidelines and strategies set by senior leadership.

Requirements

  • A Masters’ Degree from an accredited institution in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program is required.
  • At least four years of professional experience in a library.
  • At least three years of experience in cataloging.

  • Two (2) years’ supervisory experience is preferred.

  • Organizational & Workflow Management: The ideal candidate will have the capacity to structure tasks, manage multiple processes at once, and maintain clear, efficient workflows. This includes prioritizing assignments, coordinating daily operations, and ensuring materials move through the cataloging and processing pipeline smoothly and on schedule.
  • Leadership & Staff Supervision: The ideal candidate will possess skill in supervising, coaching, and developing team members. This includes delegating work effectively, providing constructive feedback, and fostering a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
  • Depending on assignment, a valid driver's license may be required and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Depending on assignment, must qualify prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment a City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Manage door-to-door workflow from receipt of materials to shelf-ready status, ensuring quality and efficiency through process evaluation and continuous improvement.
  • Establishes cataloging and processing department practices and procedures.
  • Establishes standardized time and quality benchmarks to ensure consistency and accuracy in creating catalog records.
  • Analyzes quality of catalog database and determines solutions to update and/or enhance the bibliographic and holding records.
  • Oversees and performs original and copy cataloging for all formats (print, media, digital resources), including editing data in bulk using software such as MarcEdit, OpenRefine, pyMARC, etc.
  • Develops outsourcing strategies for cataloging and processing, monitors vendor contracts for performance and compliance, establishes service goals, and evaluates outcomes to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Keeps abreast of emerging standards, tools, technology and developments in resource description and access and identity management.
  • Supports the overall mission of the Library by providing customer service in a manner that creates a positive customer experience.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements library policies and procedures.
  • Schedules, assigns, monitors, reviews, trains, and evaluates the work of assigned staff.
  • Monitors and reviews budget appropriations and expenditures for assigned work activity.
  • Participates in the interview process for the selection of new staff.
  • Compiles data, prepares reports, and/or oral presentations.
  • Assists with maintaining appearance standards by reporting facilities issues and picking up litter on library grounds.
  • Communicates clear direction, manages for results, and leads organizational change.
  • Assigns responsibility, takes corrective action, demonstrates leadership in evaluating, developing, and motivating employees.
