About The Position

The Manager, Financial Reporting is responsible for the management of the financial reporting function. The incumbent manages the preparation and analysis of the internal and external financial reports, regulatory and compliance filings and state and local premium taxes. This is a hybrid role reporting to the Harrisburg, PA office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in public accounting (auditing insurance companies) and/or insurance accounting required.
  • High level of knowledge relating to GAAP insurance accounting and finance principles
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills with evidence of dedication to quality service and customer focus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Must be able to perform computer-based tasks and access digital information necessary for job duties, including through the use of assistive technologies.
  • Must be able to complete computer-based tasks and utilize office equipment as needed to perform essential job functions.
  • Must be able to access and enter information accurately using automated systems.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with internal and external clients using telephone, electronic, or other communication systems.
  • Must be able to present information to individuals and groups.
  • Must be able to interpret and apply concepts that may or may not be based upon established guidelines.
  • Must be able to maintain acceptable attendance and adhere to scheduled work hours.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA, CPCU or MBA preferred.
  • AIAF insurance designation preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • High level of knowledge relating to Statutory insurance accounting and finance principles preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop, direct and coach assigned staff, to include establishing performance objectives and clear success criteria, as well as monitoring performance outcomes and addressing issues appropriately.
  • Lead by example in communicating with staff. Encourage open dialogue in staff meetings and 1:1 discussions.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors practices, procedures and guidelines for reporting, reconcilement, interpretation and analysis of accounting information.
  • Evaluates staffing needs, assigns work and mentors employees to ensure full utilization of staff.
  • Determines training emphasis, develops educational programs and materials for Financial Reporting staff and delivers training.
  • Quickly modifies daily behavior and tries new approaches to deal effectively with changes; does not persist with ineffective methods; leverages available resources to ease transition.
  • Manages the corporate accounting function responsible for the Statutory and GAAP financial reporting including individual company, consolidated and combined financial statements; comprehensive internal results management and board of directors reporting; regulatory financial filings including quarterly and annual statements; audited financial statements; various general ledger entries and reconciliations; and proper allocation of expense to line of business and expense groups.
  • Manages the internal preparation of various state and local premium tax returns.
  • Completes and/or ensures that staff completes ad hoc assignments or projects on time and with the appropriate level of resources and quality in order to ensure optimally meeting the objectives of the assignment or project.
  • Maintains the general ledger system including the monthly and annual closing process, opening new periods and changing workflow approvals.
  • Responsible for preparing and/or posting entries and preparing, reviewing, and approving account reconciliations.
  • Identifies the key tasks and resources needed to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Must keep abreast of statutory reporting requirement changes, accounting automation concepts, GAAP practices and principles and industry trends in order to be able to adequately lead or train staff, remain technologically current and apply the latest technology to an accounting system(s), procedural problem and issue of financial reports.
  • Actively seeks information (from coworkers, leaders, customers, competition, technologies, and regulations) to understand the rationale and implications for changes.

  • May serve on ad-hoc teams relating to incumbent’s functional area. This could include leading the team, reviewing requirements, coordination of the test results verification and resolution of issues.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Director, Financial Reporting.
