About The Position

Responsible for the oversight, detailed analysis and management of the corporate financial reporting processes and manages the accounting and financial reporting functions for SGI and its regional operations. Provides complex ad-hoc financial analysis to support business decisions from a financial perspective.

Requirements

  • A four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in relevant field of study such as Business.
  • A Chartered Professional Accounting designation (CPA).
  • Eight years’ experience comprised of four years leadership and four years’ experience in accounting or finance management.
  • Knowledge of accounting practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of financial analysis methods and tools.
  • Knowledge of financial planning and control techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of financial recording, reporting, and operating reports.
  • Knowledge of business processes and internal controls and how they interact to support corporate operations.
  • Knowledge of Canadian taxation and the insurance industry.
  • Ability to define and manage project and operating budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the internal financial reporting package (nVisions and PeopleSoft Query).
  • Reviews and approves journal entries that are completed within the financial reporting unit.
  • Works with other work units and departments to coordinate the month-end processes to ensure all entries are entered into the system in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Oversees staff in the creation and posting of monthly financial reports for the Corporation.
  • Provides financial information for the Audit, Finance and Conduct Review Committee and the Board of Directors for all companies, including narratives to support the quarterly and annual reports.
  • Creates reports and presentations for senior management to present to the Audit, Finance and Conduct Review Committee and the Board of Directors to make informed business decisions.
  • Coordinates the annual CEO/CFO certification process with internal audit.
  • Provides financial information for the Audit, Finance & Conduct Review Committee and the Board of Directors on the annual audited P&C returns for SCISL and Coachman.
  • Prepares and records the income tax provisions and coordinates and prepares the income tax returns.
  • Coordinates the licence plate renewal process for corporate vehicles and prepares the calculation for auto taxable benefits.
  • Coordinates the year-end financial statement process with all divisions and liaises with external auditors, actuaries and Crown Investments Corporation (CIC) on various financial issues.
  • Coordinates the review of financial statements with the provincial auditor, external auditors and CIC by providing financial information to them as needed.
  • Assists senior management with requests for financial reporting information from CIC, which includes CIC consolidation schedules (quarterly and annual), CIC annual report information, capital asset expenditure reporting and ad hoc requests.
  • Prepares the Management Discussion and Analysis for the Corporation’s quarterly and annual reports (in consultation with management staff).
  • Reviews the annual P&C returns for all companies, and coordinates annual P&C audits by SGI external auditors and the Superintendent of Insurance auditor.
  • Finalizes returns for SGI CANADA Insurance Services Limited (SCISL) and Coachman to be filed with Superintendent of Insurance on a quarterly basis.
  • Completes the Corporation’s International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) related projects and accounting policy analysis.
  • Corporate liaison for activities required with IFRS projects, with internal actuaries, management, external consultants, and external auditors.
  • Ensures the appropriate application of IFRS to the recording, interpretation and reporting of financial information results for all companies.
  • Maintains ongoing compliance with IFRS, researches new accounting standards, analyzes their impact on financial results and informs/provides training to the required stakeholders (Finance department, Executive Leadership Team, CIC).
  • Maintains corporate accounting policies and procedures.
  • Prepares position papers through analysis of accounting policy decisions and other financial analysis.
  • Develops, maintains, communicates and monitors the application of accounting policies relating to the acquisition, construction and capitalization of property, plant and equipment, intangible assets, and leases; the depreciation and disposition of capital assets; and the impairment of capital assets.
  • Develops business processes, policies and practices related to the implementation of corporate capitalization policy changes required specifically due to, but not exclusively as a result of, IFRS.
  • Provides expertise and guidance to others in the interpretation and implementation of capital related accounting policies and processes.
  • Develops and maintains adequate systems of internal control to accurately account for the capitalization, amortization and disposition of capital assets.

  • Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility, including development, implementation and managing of program components specific to departmental health and safety requirements.
  • Makes decisions for departmental operations that are efficient, effective and in alignment with strategic direction and priorities.
  • Ensures department and program policies, procedures and guidelines are in compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation and regulations; implements and evaluates changes to legislation and regulations in area of authority.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective system of internal controls to support reliable financial reporting and compliance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations within the span of control, and communicates the importance of internal controls to staff.
