About The Position

We are hiring a full-time, permanent Manager, Environment position working for Electricity Operations out of Edmonton, AB at Hugh J Bolton & South Service Centre. The Manager, Environment is accountable for assessing operational environmental risk and needs and providing leadership that will enable the development and implementation of environmental programs and strategies, achieving the required outcomes with time spans of up to 3 - 12 months. This role is accountable to the Associate Director, Health, Safety & Environment, Electricity Operations, in collaboration with HSSE and BU Stakeholders to support Electricity Operations in managing operational risk and achieving strategic HSE goals as they relate to the environment. This includes developing (within the parameters of HSE Standards and Corporate HSE governance) and implementing HSE programs that help the Business Unit and operating areas understand environmental impacts and aspects, respond to incidents, comply with policies, standards, procedures and legislation, and take proactive measures to improve environmental performance.

Requirements

  • Completion of post-secondary education in Environmental Management or related discipline (e.g. B.Sc., B.A.Sc.) from a recognized educational institute.
  • Worked in a complex organization (mid-sized or larger) for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Minimum 8 years applicable environmental experience, including two years of supervisory experience.
  • Provided direction, coached and managed performance of direct reports, colleagues or a project team.
  • Developed and delivered Environmental programs, projects or initiatives that align with an articulated strategic direction.
  • Established and managed budgets, linked budgets to metrics and decision-making models, and contributing to regulatory applications.
  • Engaged with internal and/or external stakeholders to learn about and take steps to respond to their needs, requirements, and expectations.
  • Managed conflict between parties and found mutually beneficial solutions.
  • Planned, resourced, and led critical organizational initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of industry best practices and applicable municipal, provincial and federal environmental legislation and regulatory processes, with experience in approvals, permitting, site assessments, remediation, and risk-based decision-making.
  • Bring advanced analytical, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills to interpret complex data, influence decisions, and drive environmental performance and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership by driving results, applying an enterprise-wide perspective, influencing stakeholders, ensuring safe and efficient operations, and building high-performing teams through collaboration, communication, and talent development.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills, with the ability to express technical information to diverse audiences across multiple organizational levels.
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Successfully attained a high school diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education)
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Identification of objectives and priorities (annual work plan) for the upcoming year.
  • Anticipate challenges and obstacles to delivering the annual work plan.
  • Identify the necessary budget, resources, and staff required to deliver the annual work plan.
  • Develop and review environmental processes to ensure compliance to policies, standards, regulatory requirements and ensure mitigation of environmental aspects.
  • Identify and implement process changes to ensure effective, efficient service delivery.
  • Execute the annual objectives and priorities (annual work plan).
  • Remove roadblocks and address issues / problems / concerns related to ensure annual targets can be met.
  • Respond to shifts in priorities as required.
  • Ensure that work is completely safely and efficiently.
  • Create capable, committed, and high-performing team(s).
  • Set appropriate performance objectives for each employee.
  • Hold employees accountable for achieving results and demonstrating required behaviors.

  • Collaborate with HSE Corporate / Shared Services to implement and maintain Environmental Management System standards, practices, and processes aligned with the EPCOR HSE Strategic Plan, ensuring consistency across the Business Unit.
  • Maintain internal partnerships and input with environmental groups in EPCOR to facilitate environmental initiatives.
  • Develop and execute plans to improve operational effectiveness, including implementation of continuous improvement actions.
  • Provide input to the environmental plans and directions, ensure an appropriate understanding of the Electricity Operations strategy.
  • Measure, analyze, and report on environmental performance metrics, identifying risks and driving continuous improvement of Environmental programs and processes.
  • Support Business Unit compliance with HSE policies, standards, procedures, and legislation through audits, site observations, training, communication, and review of internal/external audit responses.
  • Partner with leadership and external stakeholders (regulators, industry groups) to drive environmental compliance, influence outcomes, and support ISO 14001/45001 certification and ongoing Environmental Management System improvement.
