About The Position

Children’s Wisconsin is seeking a Manager, Enterprise Architecture to connect clinical and business priorities to practical technology direction and solution designs. The role develops enterprise roadmaps and standards, architects complex solutions with particular depth in infrastructure, and establishes and leads the enterprise architecture practice. It aims to improve technology investment decisions, reduce unnecessary complexity and risk, and guide delivery of secure, reliable, supportable services. The position combines principal architect responsibilities with management of a developing enterprise architecture function. Initially, the manager performs architecture work directly, establishing methods, relationships, and reusable designs for delivery, and continues substantial individual architecture work as the team grows. The scope spans business capabilities, applications, data and integration, infrastructure, and cloud, with domain specialists contributing detailed expertise. The role partners with the CISO’s organization, which retains ownership of security architecture and security policy. This is a full-time, salaried, hybrid position based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, business, or a related field, or relevant experience.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible technology experience, including substantial responsibility for enterprise architecture, solution architecture, and infrastructure design in a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated experience personally producing architecture deliverables and guiding solutions through implementation.
  • At least 7 years of enterprise architecture experience, including developing current- and target-state architectures, technology standards, and transition roadmaps tied to business needs.
  • At least 7 years of solution and infrastructure architecture experience, with strong infrastructure architecture depth supported by prior engineering or implementation experience.
  • Experience defining requirements, evaluating options, documenting design tradeoffs, and guiding integrated solutions into operation.
  • At least 5 years of leadership and execution experience, including leading architecture decisions across teams, facilitating stakeholder agreement, and mentoring technical professionals.
  • At least 5 years of experience establishing an enterprise architecture practice, recruiting or managing architects, or leading architecture in healthcare or another environment requiring continuous service availability.
  • Ability to connect business capabilities, applications, data, integration, and infrastructure; evaluate portfolio and lifecycle implications; and apply architecture governance to investment and delivery decisions.
  • Ability to work independently as the initial architect, prioritize competing demands, establish practical methods, and communicate recommendations to executive and technical audiences.
  • Ability to assume formal people-management responsibilities as staffing grows.
  • Ability to design across network, compute, storage, identity, resilience, and cloud dependencies, using domain specialists where needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Azure solution architecture experience.
  • AWS experience.
  • Analytics platform enablement experience.
  • Application rationalization experience.
  • Data center migration experience.
  • Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks and modeling methods.
  • Relevant enterprise or cloud architecture certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Translate organizational strategy and clinical and business needs into current-state assessments, target architectures, and achievable transition roadmaps.
  • Connect business capabilities to applications, data, platforms, and services; identify dependencies, duplication, technical debt, and lifecycle risks; recommend sequenced improvements aligned with funding and delivery capacity.
  • Lead architecture for complex initiatives from discovery through implementation, defining requirements, integration points, system boundaries, and quality expectations for availability, performance, security, recovery, and support.
  • Produce solution diagrams, options analyses, design decisions, and implementation guidance; resolve cross-domain tradeoffs and validate delivered solutions against approved design intent.
  • Provide infrastructure and cloud architecture expertise across enterprise networks, compute, virtualization, storage, identity dependencies, resilience, and hybrid cloud.
  • Develop reference architectures and evaluate hosting and modernization options; work with Cloud Engineering on Azure foundations supporting analytics and later cloud expansion, and with Infrastructure on workload placement and phased data center migration designs.
  • Establish architecture principles, standards, review criteria, and decision records; lead reviews early enough to influence design and purchasing decisions, document exceptions and remediation plans, and track decisions through delivery.
  • Evaluate proposed technologies and vendor solutions for enterprise fit, integration, operating cost, lifecycle, and supportability; develop recommendations with service owners, the IT Business Office, and procurement.
  • Provide architecture input to investment prioritization and sourcing decisions and identify opportunities to reuse platforms or retire redundant technology.
  • Build and maintain an architecture repository containing standards, reference designs, roadmaps, and decision records; establish a repeatable engagement model with project and service teams.
  • Coordinate application portfolio and dependency information with designated record owners and connect architecture priorities to enterprise planning and delivery.
  • Plan architecture workload and staffing, recruit an additional architect as approved, establish goals and development plans, coach staff, evaluate performance, and address performance needs as the team grows.
  • Mentor technical leads across IS and build shared architecture skills without creating dependence on a single decision maker.
  • Work with engineers, application owners, analytics teams, and vendors to test assumptions, assess feasibility, and resolve design issues; participate in proofs of concept and review technical deliverables.
  • Provide architecture guidance through implementation and operational handoff while engineering teams retain build and operational accountability.
  • Explain technology choices, costs, dependencies, and risks to clinical, business, and technology leaders; facilitate decisions across teams with competing priorities.
  • Report roadmap progress, material exceptions, and architecture outcomes to the CTO and governance groups, and adjust priorities as organizational needs change.
