About The Position

Wavelo is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead their Platform Foundations team. This team is responsible for defining engineering standards and foundational components for the entire platform. The role is primarily technical, requiring the manager to stay close to the code and architecture while providing leadership to a senior team. The manager will work across backend services, DevOps practices, and event-driven infrastructure to establish patterns for other engineering teams. Key responsibilities include owning the developer experience, component standards, and collaborating with Operations and SRE teams on reliability and observability. This role is fully remote for applicants based in Canada.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of backend engineering experience, with hands-on proficiency in Golang or similar languages
  • Deep experience with event-driven and async architectures — Kafka, NATS, or comparable systems
  • Background in platform or infrastructure engineering: you've built shared internal platforms, not just product features
  • Experience defining engineering standards at an org level — RFCs, ADRs, or architecture review processes
  • Strong DevOps sensibility: CI/CD, containerization, Kubernetes, cloud-native infrastructure
  • Experience managing or mentoring engineers, with a bias toward growing people through the work
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and incomplete requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with supporting & delivering frontend development and component/design systems — enough to govern a shared UI library
  • Experience in telecom, BSS/OSS, or similarly complex domain platforms

Responsibilities

  • Partner with engineering leadership to evolve and standardize the foundational architecture for a cloud-native, event-driven telecom platform — identifying areas for improvement and driving safe, incremental modernization alongside active development
  • Own developer experience: build tooling, CI pipeline performance, dependency management, and inner-source contribution models across a shared monorepo
  • Govern shared UI component standards and design system practices used across teams
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards: RFCs, ADRs, architecture reviews
  • Partner closely with Operations and SRE to define observability standards (tracing, logging, metrics), SLO/SLI frameworks, and reliability practices
  • Champion AI-first development practices across tooling, workflows, and culture
  • Manage and develop a small, established team of senior engineers

Benefits

  • Generous benefits
  • Total rewards offering that includes fair compensation
