About The Position

Lead site environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) strategy as a business-enabling function that protects employees, reduces company liability, and supports environmental stewardship, ensuring all aspects of EH&S are managed in compliance with applicable laws and in conformance with DRS EH&S Policy while building a proactive, metrics-driven safety program. This role develops a mature safety culture that supports production by reducing disruptions, rework, and risk-driven downtime, while building a workforce that trusts the system, and supports environmental, health, and safety activities across a multi-site business unit with facilities in San Diego, California, and Madison, Wisconsin. This onsite role can be based out of either our San Diego, CA, or Madison, WI facility with 30% travel expected between both sites.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Environmental Science or related field required with a minimum of 5 years of experience in EHS in a manufacturing environment, as well as a proven record of success developing, implementing and managing effective EH&S programs
  • Management experience and superior teamwork skills are essential as is the ability to lead and build teams and to effectively identify and resolve conflicts
  • Strong communication, organization and negotiation skills are mandatory
  • Must have excellent PC-based computer skills
  • U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal LSO certification (e.g., BLS/LIA Certified Laser Safety Officer) preferred, or willingness to obtain within a defined period
  • Experience with OSHA and annual compliance training strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all aspects of site environmental, health and safety are managed in compliance with applicable laws and in conformance with the DRS EH&S Policy
  • Ensure that a proactive safety programs developed and implemented, complete with metrics
  • Interface with and manage relationships with all applicable government and regulatory agencies
  • Managing site performance and contract commitments to deliver continuous performance
  • Lead teams in the risk assessment process
  • Oversee and deliver all related EHS development and training programs
  • Maintain required procedures, plans, training materials and related documents to ensure audit readiness at any time
  • Providing EHS audit services, as well as project management and training as required
  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Leading the participation by business leaders in administering the day-to-day aspects of Environmental, Health and Safety management
  • Acting as an advocate for Green Initiatives within the organization
  • Serving as the emergency coordinator for the site
  • Maintaining relationships with regulatory agencies having jurisdiction over the facility(ies)
  • Working knowledge of ANSI Z136.1 (Safe Use of Lasers) and applicable OSHA/state laser safety regulations
  • Experience establishing or administering a laser safety program in a manufacturing or R&D environment, including Class 4 laser systems
  • Ability to serve as, or provide qualified oversight of, a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) — including hazard evaluation, Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) determination, control-measure selection, and controlled-area design
  • Competence in laser-specific controls: interlocks, protective eyewear selection (OD/wavelength matching), signage, beam management, and operator training/authorization
  • Familiarity with laser incident investigation and medical surveillance requirements
