About The Position

Reporting to the AVP, Data & Reporting, the Data Engineering Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the data engineering function, focused on executing and achieving strategic and operational targets. The Data Engineering Manager leads the design, development and operation of data engineering capabilities that support enterprise analytics, reporting and decision making. The position oversees data pipelines, data models, and analytics infrastructure. The Data Engineering Manager will lead a small team of data engineers. The role will collaborate cross functionally with internal and external business partners, driving the strategic vision for data innovation, strengthening data and insight capabilities at Farm Mutual Re. This position offers a hybrid work environment, with a primary corporate office in Cambridge and access to a satellite office in Toronto.

Requirements

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Math or a related field
  • You have a minimum of 7 years of experience in Analytics with a strong foundation in data modelling & SQL
  • You have 1-2 years of leadership experience, including coaching and developing employees
  • You have Azure experience along with other technologies such as Redshift, S2, Synapse, Fabric, Databricks, Snowflake, Hadoop etc.
  • You have experience with scripting and data manipulation languages such as SQL, Python, Spark, Scala, R, Java
  • You have experience with data visualization tools such as Qlik, Tableau and/or Power BI
  • You have experience with DevOps concepts and tools, such as building CI/CD pipelines along with an understanding of SDLC and Agile Frameworks
  • You have strong collaboration skills, working with cross functional teams to the drive data analytics frameworks
  • You have strong analytical judgment to guide the team toward effective, practical solutions to achieve strategic and operational goals

Nice To Haves

  • Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Data Engineer Associate – DP-203, Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate) are considered assets

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and operation of data engineering capabilities that support enterprise analytics, reporting, and decision-making
  • Lead the development and maintenance of analytical data structures for efficient dashboarding, reporting and analysis
  • Oversee the creation of a centralized data warehouse. This includes designing and implementing data models that support self-service analytics in tools such as Power BI or Tableau
  • Establish data quality, monitoring and validation standards
  • Ensure data delivery to analytics and reporting platforms used by internal and external business partners
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to define and evolve standards for data modeling, tools and analytics platforms (i.e. SQL-based warehouses, Power BI)
  • Leads data acquisition and integration efforts, partnering with internal and external business partners to select the right tools, architectures and methods
  • Maintain clear documentation of data processes, pipelines, and business logic to support knowledge sharing and ongoing team development
  • Manages the coordination of activities within the data engineering function, responsible for results including methods and staffing
  • Responsible for coaching, developing, and elevating team members’ performance
