About The Position

This function, reporting to the Director, Accounting Advisory, is responsible for supporting SLF's business transactions and accounting policy projects under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). In addition, this role will also support accounting reporting and analysis for sustainability initiatives in accordance with the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). The Manager, Corporate Accounting and Sustainability Reporting will participate in the researching and benchmarking of the accounting implications on transactions and initiatives, implementation of new accounting standards and provide assistance in other projects as required.

Requirements

  • Accounting designation with 2 years of practical experience
  • Working knowledge on IFRS and experience in accounting research and policy is strongly desirable.
  • Results driven, ability to take on ownership of tasks, identify issues and provide alternatives.
  • Strong problem solving, analytical and conceptual skills; can see the "big picture" in a complex environment.
  • Ability to manage changing priorities; excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Self-starter, with accuracy and attention to detail, works well in a team as well as with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written communication skills in order to present findings/results and recommendations to target audience in a concise manner.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills - one-on-one and small groups. Influencing skills necessary to be able to communicate recommendations and obtain cooperation across functional groups to achieve objectives.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with sustainability reporting, climate-related disclosures, or emerging sustainability standards is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the insurance industry will be a strong asset.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director on the accounting analysis for various initiatives such as sustainability, strategic initiatives, goodwill and impairment analysis etc.
  • Researching the complex accounting issues that arise and providing analytical support to help conclude on their implications.
  • Documenting the final accounting analysis and drafting the transaction-driven changes to the financial reporting and disclosure.
  • Ongoing collaboration with our stakeholders, such as other corporate functions (i.e. corp dev, capital, tax, etc) and BG finance teams.
  • Providing ad-hoc advisory in support of their business initiatives.
  • Conducting research, coordinating with stakeholders and recommending on appropriate accounting treatment and presenting recommendation to senior staff.
  • Work with the Director to manage the ongoing monitoring processes over emerging IASB activity including new accounting standard amendments, issued IFRICS, exposure drafts and discussion papers.
  • Planning and delivering quarterly presentation in company-wide IFRS education program.
  • Support accounting advisory work related to sustainability and climate-related reporting developments, including monitoring emerging standards, assessing implications for financial reporting and disclosures, and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders as required.
  • Provide required support to the quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements process.
  • Identify opportunities and implement improvements to accounting advisory processes leveraging technology and AI capabilities where appropriate.
