About The Position

The Controls Product Engineering Manager is a senior technical leader who plays a critical role in the design, development, and continuous improvement of HVAC equipment control solutions. This role acts primarily as an individual contributor with technical leadership responsibilities, owning products across their lifecycle while collaborating closely with cross-functional stakeholders. The position supports strategic initiatives through shared ownership with senior management for the creation and advancement of innovative control solutions that improve the quality, reliability, and competitiveness of AAON equipment. The ideal candidate has deep experience in HVAC controls, strong product lifecycle management capability, and the ability to communicate effectively with both internal teams and external customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience in controls or HVAC systems.
  • 6+ years of experience in development of control products, preferably within HVAC or a related industry.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC system operation, including airflow, refrigeration, speeds, pressures, temperatures, and related equipment functions.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems and ERP integration.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment drawings and wiring diagrams.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and industry standards such as UL, ETL, Modbus, ISO, and similar frameworks.
  • Excellent leadership, project management, and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex data and recommend effective solutions.
  • High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical information and apply judgment to resolve control system issues.
  • Ability to work effectively in office, manufacturing, and occasional field environments.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with senior management and internal and external customers to define product goals, requirements, and success criteria.
  • Own product development and delivery outcomes, providing routine status updates to management and maintaining clear communication to ensure expectations are met throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Develop and implement project plans, processes, and procedures to ensure successful execution of engineering initiatives.
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and marketing to keep projects aligned with design intent, timelines, and business objectives.
  • Provide hands-on technical expertise in the design, development, and implementation of control systems.
  • Support documentation, technical support, and training teams in the release and sustainment of new products and enhancements.
  • Communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders, including controls engineering, mechanical engineering, production, product management, documentation, field support, and training.
  • Interface with external stakeholders such as representatives, installers, field technicians, and end customers as needed.
  • Track ongoing projects to ensure adherence to budgets and schedules.
  • Partner with management to review feasibility, manage trade-offs, and address cost or complexity risks.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitor offerings.
  • Leverage market knowledge to deliver best-in-class solutions that maintain AAON’s competitive advantage.
