About The Position

The Manager Commercial Credit is accountable for overseeing and managing a portfolio of commercial and small business lending files. The incumbent will be responsible for the adjudication and evaluation of credit applications of members and monitoring of existing accounts and ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. The incumbent collaborates with departments and commercial team to provide support and direction to ensure efficient and effective commercial credit operations in an ongoing effort to providing an overall positive member experience. The manager will work closely across multiple divisions and cross functional teams including sales teams, to support business growth and objectives while minimizing credit risk. This role is open to hybrid/remote working arrangements within British Columbia.

Requirements

  • Completed post-secondary education in related field (i.e. Business Economics, Finance)
  • 7-10 years of commercial lending, commercial portfolio management experience
  • Previous experience with leadership accountability for the performance of commercial and small business loans.
  • Strong analytical and financial analysis skills
  • Proven experience in credit risk assessment, loan structuring, and portfolio management.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements, audit processes, and credit union policies.
  • Strong background in collaborating with cross-functional teams, including sales, underwriting, and compliance.
  • Strong leadership, communication and negotiation skills.
  • Equivalent combination of the above may be appropriate

Responsibilities

  • Reviews, analyzes and approves commercial credit applications within delegated lending limits and makes recommendations for approval to the appropriate parties as required.
  • Provides advice and guidance on large, complex loans or other commercial credit issues, and provides technical direction as required.
  • Ensures annual reviews are completed in accordance with Policy and follows-up with the Commercial team as needed.
  • Negotiates commercial loans with Commercial team to ensure they provide a balance of risk and return.
  • Monitors commercial out-of-orders, watch list, delinquency, and maturities to ensure the proper administration of the portfolio.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the economy, the market and the Credit Union’s competition with particular attention to the commercial and retail real estate markets.
  • Conducts post reviews and ensure feedback is provided and a response is given with amendments made to the file as necessary.
  • Assesses credit practices to ensure appropriate response to evolving needs. Recommends commercial credit policy and procedure improvements to support higher productivity and efficiency.
  • Manages the credit process to meet quality and target turnaround timelines.
  • Monitors processing and loan underwriting methods to ensure quality, delinquency control, overdrafts, policy and documentation requirements and requirements set out by regulators & auditors are satisfied.
  • Coordinates the dissemination of loan policies and procedures; ensures employees follow loan underwriting policies and any policy deviations are corrected.
  • Regularly updates the approved legal firm, appraisers, QS and Syndication lists.
  • Oversees setup of employee access to relevant lending software and systems.
  • Reviews monthly audits and conducts random reviews of commercial credit files.
  • Conducts regular reviews of lending limits, audit controls, lending caps and other risk management areas to ensure compliance
  • Assists with resolving internal audit and BCFSA audit findings.
  • Reviews and coordinates preparation of and verifies a variety of regular and ad-hoc reports.
  • Regularly review and monitor the status of outstanding credit accounts to identify and address potential issues.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports on credit activities and portfolio performance to senior management.
  • Maintains positive and mutually beneficial relationships with product and service vendors.
  • Fosters positive relationships with internal partners to ensure smoothly implemented practices.
  • Attends community events, educational seminars and builds a positive profile in the financial community.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, across the organization to ensure consistency and alignment with business and strategic objectives.
  • Maintains strong collaborative relationships with external partners, agencies, and vendors to ensure the successful execution of initiatives.
  • Partners with learning & development in development and delivery of commercial credit training programs.
