About The Position

University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a Building and Grounds Services Manager to join the Department of Facilities Operations. The individual will be responsible for providing day-to-day leadership to the building and grounds staff. This role accomplishes responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline normally acquired through advanced education or specialized training. It resolves issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking. The position contributes to the development and evaluation of goals and objectives, creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance, and may supervise, mentor, or coordinate the work of others. The Manager may independently manage or administer programs, processes, projects, or resources, applying advanced, expert level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills with substantial latitude in decision making. Goals and objectives are set to align with defined strategy, and the supervisor is informed of progress. The role works on ambiguous matters generally without precedent or structure, independently developing standardization and protocol, and making departures from traditional approaches to develop novel solutions. It influences strategy, program, policy development, and best practices, acting as an expert resource to others.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field
  • Four (4) years of experience in the field of support, general, or facility operation services.
  • Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.
  • Knowledge of position requirements.
  • Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.
  • Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.

  • Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and works with staff to ensure high performance through training, scheduling, coordinating and delegating work, monitoring and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member benefit and effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity.
  • Maintain functional efficiency and productivity by reviewing, developing, implementing, and coordinating procedures with the intent of improving efficiency and complying with relevant policy and safety standards.
  • Foster and support a collaborative consultative environment, providing high quality service to business unit and campus representatives, as well as the wider University community.
  • Monitor, review, and evaluate ongoing functional program and controls, assessing needs and facilitating improvements.
  • Develops, monitors, and controls budgets and expenses for operational area.
  • Prepare report formulation and provide quality assurance oversight for the area of responsibility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
