About The Position

Walmart is undergoing a large-scale transformation of its supply chain network, modernizing 40+ year-old legacy distribution systems into next-generation automated facilities. As part of this evolution, the Manager, Automation Engineering (Offline Design) will play a critical role in supporting the integration of Symbotic automation within ambient distribution centers. While Symbotic powers highly automated robotic systems, this role focuses on the “offline” infrastructure—retrofitting existing, live facilities to align with new automation technologies. This includes reimagining physical layouts, optimizing racking systems, and coordinating complex construction efforts while operations continue uninterrupted.

Requirements

  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field and 2 years’ experience in engineering, supply chain, or related area.
  • Option 2: 4 years’ experience in engineering, supply chain, or related area.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and stakeholders simultaneously
  • Problem Solving: Comfortable navigating ambiguity and developing creative solutions in non-standard environments
  • Business Acumen: Understanding of cost drivers, financial impact, and operational trade-offs
  • Communication & Influence: Ability to clearly present ideas and influence cross-functional partners
  • Continuous Improvement: Experience identifying inefficiencies and driving process optimization
  • Collaboration: Strong partnership skills across engineering, construction, and operations teams

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in supply chain, warehouse, or distribution center environments
  • Familiarity with automation systems or robotics integration
  • Knowledge of racking systems, material handling equipment, or facility layout design
  • Exposure to data analysis tools and visualization platforms

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end racking design and implementation programs across large-scale distribution centers
  • Serve as the program lead for racking initiatives, managing scope, timelines, and delivery
  • Oversee vendor relationships, contract execution, and project performance
  • Redesign and optimize pallet racking systems, including vertical expansion to maximize storage capacity
  • Support facility retrofits, including removal of outdated infrastructure and integration of new layouts
  • Partner with engineering and operations teams to ensure alignment between automated (Symbotic) and non-automated workflows
  • Coordinate with construction partners, vendors, and internal stakeholders to execute complex, multi-phase projects
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects within active, operational facilities
  • Identify risks, resolve issues, and adapt plans in real time
  • Leverage data and analytics to inform design decisions and improve operational efficiency
  • Analyze workflows and recommend process improvements using methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen
  • Contribute to business cases and project planning, including cost, schedule, and resource requirements
  • Support integration of automation systems into existing facilities
  • Assist in evaluating automation opportunities, space requirements, and system performance
  • Partner with teams to track implementation progress and ensure successful deployment
